So I was filling out an application for a place called H. H. Gregg today. It is a commissioned based electronics retailer. I am tired of getting paid for my time rather than for what I do in my time. I have no idea how I have survived on an hourly rate for three years. It eats at my soul, seriously. I have a friend who I trained at Circuit years ago who works there; he is making 90-100k a year after taxes. He has been begging me to come up, and I finally decided to do so. I was filling in the obligatory sections about job history and this is what I ended up with. The GM is a cool guy who loves a laugh according to my friend; we will see.

Oct 2000 – Sep 2001: Houston Circuit City (Willowbrook)

$7.50/hr - commission (5k a month)

Reason for leaving: Girl asked me to marry her but she talked about killing me in her sleep at night; in five different languages.

Sep 2001 – March 2005: Jackson, TN Circuit City

Commission (4-6k a month) $12.90/hr after commission was dropped.

Reason for leaving: Store closed, I wanted to burn it down since they decided no to tell anyone before hand and just called me at home. I calmed down and collected a fat severance check and didn’t work for 12 months. It was lovely.

Feb 2006 – April 2006: Jackson, TN Fed/Ex Kinko’s outside sales consultant and accounts supervisor.

$12.25/hr

Reason for leaving: I called a young woman that worked there a lazy wench, which she was, in front of customers. She proceeded to curse me like I had stolen her children and was fired. I told the GM (my old supervisor form Circuit) to fire me as well so hers would stick. I moved to St. Louis. They would still hire me back.

July 2006 - June 2007: St. Louis Best Buy

$9.00/hour - $10.78/hr

Reason for leaving: A woman I had known for twelve years decided she loved me and asked me to marry her, and move back home. I said yes.

June 2007 – Present: Jackson, TN Best Buy

$10.78/hr - $12.00/hr (I am due a review, past due actually, and if I were not to get at least $12.00/hr I would quit. So that is what I am going with)

Reason for leaving: She changed her mind. Plus! There is far too much paperwork involved in the selling of consumer electronics at Best Buy, not to mention the pay sucks. Time to get a real job again.

I thought about this a lot more than I usually do. One I was offered a promotion (new position) at work. Everyone there is nice to work with, it is a good place to work, but the crap in St. Louis set upon us by corporate has filtered it's way down to TN. It now takes me an hour or more after we close to get finished with paper work and closing duties. Screw that. The promotion would bring me a three to five dollar an hour pay raise, but that is still about 50% of what I can do during a bad week on commission, sans paperwork.

Second, watch 40 year old virgin, that is exactly how Circuit City was during the commission days. I miss it terribly. One thing about a commissioned job is that the company does not pay you a dime. They could care less what you do as long as you make money, because when you make money they make tons of money. I like the fact that if someone is irritating me I can tell them we need to have a man to man conversation outside and I don't have to go check my employee handbook to see what words I can and can not use.

I've been no where on the East Coast, Knoxville makes a good home base. College girls and lots of them, money, a few bars I can go to without fear of running into a couple people that would make me want to go jump off of a bridge, and along with that the chance to meet new people like that. My best friend and her husband are going to relocate to North Carolina when he gets back from Iraq and he has family in Knoxville. It is close enough to home I can get there if needed and far enough away I don't have to worry about drop ins. College girls.

Another reason is that they are opening a store in Hilton Head next year. That is a goal to shoot for.

I won't go back to St. Louis, I ain't staying here.

There is a fairly large Writer's Guild in Knoxville, and there are lots of college girls.

The money will be spectacular. I ain't a big material things kind of person, but I want a new car, a early 70's Harley soft tail, to pay off my folks house, and start a college fund for a young man in St. Louis. I can get all of that done, plus some, in less than two years.

College girls, and maybe a few college level writing courses and brush up on my Philosophy as well.

Did I mention college girls?

I have no idea the time line, but it might be before a month is out. I do plan to make one more trip up to Missouri before I leave.

Looks like your best income jobs have been when you were on commission, so screw the hourly rate stuff and go with the company that will cut you the best commission deal & good luck. I worked most of my life as an Independent Contractor on straight commission.

I really have no idea how I have managed to work an hourly rate as long as I have. I think everyone should be paid a commission type of salary. Pay based on performance and results rather than time. I bet we would see a hell of a lot more efficient work force as well as less over all lazy ass people. I love the ability of being in control of my own pay regardless of bad day or good. Thanks for the well wishes Lon.

Sent the application in this morning at about 4 am; got a phone call at noon. Interview sometime in the next two weeks when ever I can get it worked out. It is a five hour drive, six with time change so I can't just run down there. On the road again before September is gone as I have never failed to get a job after being interviewed in person. Be some good times.

Keep me posted punk

Got a text message from the store manager today. he told me to forget the interview just come on up when I am ready. It will be less than a month. I told my store manager here today and he told me I was breaking his heart and if I ever wanted to come back just keep the Best Buy shirt and walk in the store and start working. I always had a spot there if I wanted. Doubt that happens. I only came home for one reason and since he (my manager here) is her best friend he knows that and I told him as much. He told me to forget the details and just come back if I wanted to. I figure I'll make a two day trip back to St. Louis and head to Knoxville before the end of September. I have three weeks of vacation time to burn.

If you get this job will accomodation be provided & if not will you stay with your friend whilst looking for a place? Is accomodation easy to find where you are going?

Very stressful for you finding a new job & accomodation, good luck :-6
