Listen for the statistics....
400 carved ceilings...900 volunteers handcarved the pillars...no steel was used in its construction...made of Turkish limestone. There was more but I couldn't catch it. I think it's pretty cool but that linoleum floor just kind of doesn't fit in a place with such artistry. :wah:

Hi Red, no they are not shrines, the pictures of deities are called murtis(idols). Murtis are sacred idol of God used to offer worship. People use them to take Darshan. Darshan means to see with reverence and devotion. Most people also offer prays to the deities and eat prasad(blessed, holy food). That's why there are dishes in font of the deities.
