How-to Column?

Greetings fellow FG'ers. Since the Science and Technology forums are not seeing a great deal of posting action, I propose to run a weekly How-To column, covering topics such as computers and living in the digital world.

However, I would first need two things from you folks: One, whether you have enough interest in such a column to justify its writing, and two: I would like to know if anybody would like to submit 'articles' on areas they are very proficient in. For example, Cass might want to do a Photoshop tutorial, I could do various computer tutorials, someone might be an expert in digital photography, and so on.

What say you, fellow seedlings? Good or bad idea?

capt_buzzard:

Firefox 1.0 is an alternative web browser to Internet Explorer, one that provides more security for the websurfer due to the way certain things are handled differently than IE. For a good explanation of the major differences, read this and poke around here and here.

Personally, I could use all the help I can get navigating around this thing. I have had internet access for a whopping 4 months, and there's so much I can't do. My sister helps me a lot, but it gets aggravating for her, because I'm usually asking her by instant messenger. Drives her nuts. So, yeah, I think it's a great idea, and I won't be able to contribute one single thing to it! Hopefully, I'd learn something, though! :yh_bigsmi

Firefox is for everybody. And it works fine with XP. I'm using it in conjunction with XP right now. AND you can download a British English version of it :)

I've been on the net way longer than you and have no idea how to do this either so I am anxious to see the answer.

I think it's a great idea :D

It looks like there is a decent amount of interest in running this column, so I will start with one either later this week or the beginning of next week (it all depends on when I have time to sit down and write it).

To answer BabyRider's question, following is how to make links appear as I do.

While you can do this using the controls of the WYSIWYG editor above, I type fast enough to type the code in manually.

In the following example, I use {} braces in place of what you are supposed to use - [] brackets. If I were to use the brackets you wouldn't be able to see the code...it would just execute.

So, on to the example.

Once you find the URL you want to link, let's say Google - http://www.google.com - then you want to decide what you want to name the link. I will call it search engine.

The convention you need to follow for creating the link is as thus (remember, to really use this you would replace the braces {} with brackets []).

{url=http://www.thisistheurl.com}this is the link text{/url}

So, applying this to our example, you would type:

{url=http://www.google.com}search engine{/url}.

Once you substitute [] for the {} above, you will get a result like this:

search engine

Got it? I hope that was clear enough.

Thanks Hawke! Maybe people could post questions so you would know some of the subjects people are interested in?

OK! My first question: If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

:yh_rotfl Thanks for the instruction, Hawke! I'm sure I'll have lots more REAL questions for you!

Hi Hawke,

I like the idea - but realize that it takes a lot of time to do this! If there are enough people interested in participating - we can initiate an "articles" system here. (One of oh so many plans for fg. :-6 )

Sounds good Tombstone...

Let's see how people respond to a few test posts first. To that end, folks, I need your questions! What are you burning to know how to do? Are you worried about computer security...would you like to know how to photoshop...program your vcr...take better pictures with your digital camera...set up a home network...etc. etc.

Submit your questions!

How about something on how to keep your computer running the best it can. We were talking about this at work today. I knew a lady who didn't clear cookies, *.tmp files, etc. in almost 2 years because she didn't know she needed to! Or something about ridding your computer of spyware. Just a couple of suggestions of somewhere to start.
