I just don't understand the need to be in constant communication with others over trivia. I spent most of my working career in Sales & Sales Management and would have loved to have had a cell phone instead of stopping at a gas station in the pouring rain to call a client, or my office to get messages.

It's probably a generational thing, but much of the stuff I overhear in airports, super markets, toilets, movie lobbies, on the street, etc. seems to be bullsh-- conversation. There are tremendous advantages to having a cell and I am aware of all of them, it's the mindless drivel that I am talking about that takes place with text as well as cell. Much of it seems to be "she said", "he said" crap. I know it won't change and will no doubt escalate even more as technology gets even more sophisticated. It's the dependency that concerns me and what I view as a lack of self sufficiency. Take away a cell phone from some one for a month and it could well lead to a mental and physical breakdown. To some extent, forums are the same (OK give me hell), that need some of us have to stay connected. Just read some of the comments when some posters can't post due to computer problems etc. A real disaster.

This technology has created a new language within itself.

The younger generation even talk in code

A few young girls were over - all I heard was OMG - BFF - LOL etc..

that was their face to face conversation

I was like OMG..!! just kidding

Has anyone else heard this - they don't even say a full word anymore.

Hi Lon,

I agree with the part about content over cell phones-what a waste of a perfectly good minute to be talking about some of this nonsense stuff or exchanging expletives. I have to tell you all though that my daughter complained to me the other day that her friend just had to text her back to say yes to a, as far as my daughter was concerned, rhetorical and insignificant question. So even the younger generation knows about crap :). The part I don't agree with you on is the part about dependency, because from my experience with technology breakdown, those involved have been much better off for the result of the breakdown--notably my kids :D. They find other things to do that require more brain engagement.

That's true of kids Erin, they are resilient, but take the cell away from the 32 year old Soccer Mom and see what happens.

Soccer Moms need their phones to find their kids so they freak out when they can't do this I guess. :wah:

Remember the days when kids couldn't go that far from home

and to reach your kids, Dad would go outside & whistle or yell your name out.

you don't hear Patsy - Joe, dinner time - my parents never had a cell phone, just good lungs..

That is so true but it was my mom who would bellow to us across the pond and park that it was dinner time, man did she have the lungs! :D

I too, agree with you Lon, regarding the incessant drivel that goes on. I am amazed at how many people have their hand stuck to their ear when I'm shopping or in town. It seems like *everyone* is talking. Like it cannot wait till they get home. And it seems all stupid talk.

I have a cell phone and I enjoy it but you won't find me making a lot of public calls. Or taking many. I do enjoy shopping with it because when my friend and I get separated in Walmart supercenter, we just call each other for our location. :wah: It beats walking all over the store trying to find each other.

Patsy, I have heard about that code language. I can't imagine actually saying "LOL" in place of just laughing. That's just weird. :D

My last outgoing text message: "That was a wonderful kiss, I was impressed. Sweet dreams sugar.

My last incoming: I want some more, sweet dreams yourself darlin.

Haha. I love my life.

I might have to write a story.

Funnily enough, I was talking to someone about this the other day! :wah:

Every year about 10-20 new words are added to the English dictionary and a similar number of words, which have fallen into disuse, are discarded.

So can you imagine the dictionary in a thousand years time?

It'll be full of abbreviations and acronyms and no 'proper' words whatsoever! :yh_ooooo

OMG! WTF? Geez! Heavy man, not cool. OMBG. STFU. LOL. :lips: :wah:

Well I'm the only one who doesn't have one in my family, just don't feel the need to use one to be honest, especially considering the price. I mean all I would want to do is perhaps ring people, not all the other extra's that come with them today.

My brothers though literally have their phones glued to their ears hahaha. :p

I just posted about cellphones in the pet peeves section and then find this thread. :wah: That's what makes me crazy. You're waiting for the person in front of you to pay for their stuff, they are on the phone chatting away about pretty much nothing, and it's taking them forever because they can't come up for air long enough to hear the total.

Another thing with mobiles. Why did the government introduce the don't drive whilst talking on your mobile. Don't get me wrong it's a great idea, that should stop more accidents and deaths. But the key there is should. I mean NO-ONE ever pays any attention to it!! Apparently even on a short trip in the car, people still can't do without their phone. :-5

I get annoyed when people use cell phones while driving or shopping. Hang up and concentrate on what you're doing! :-5

My friend does that! Even when we're entering or exiting Las Vegas, which requires all faculties be present, she'll whip out that phone and call up her husband and start yakking. I don't let that happen anymore, I tell her to pull over when I'm in the car. I just think endangering someone's life with your cell phone is incredibly rude.

welcome to FG Lon hope you enjoy your stay :) hehehe

Hey we are creatures of the "pack" mentality, everybody's business is our business.

Lots of people find comfort, distraction, relief etc in staying connected. For some people it's a bit of a life line. For others it's entertainment. Hey when ya got friends who like to chat, then chat with them.

To each their own.

I totally agree. Priorities are getting all messed up. People are getting hurt or killed by folks who think it is more impartant to take that call than to drive a 3000 lb vehicle at 60 MPH.

Hey Chris,

Good to see ya:-6. I have a cell phone because it makes me feel safe. If I only use it once, then the price is worth it. So many times I've been stranded on the road or needed someone to talk to during a grueling ride "down south" to Florida. It was soooo good to touch base with a loved one.

I really use it only for emergencies....such as calling ahead for a pizza:yh_rotfl

People don't have attention spans anymore. I figure most people on these forums don't read the stories; just like the majority of the folks on my Myspace page don't read them either. Poor suckers.

The cell phone for me is an easy and affordable way to keep in touch with all of the folks I know in all of those different places. I also haven't wore a watch since I purchased my cell phone back in June or July.

Thanks for the compliment Lon.

I love my cell phone!! It's a great communication too, when used properly. Like champagne is a great drink, when enjoyed appropriately. My cell phone has a fully operational switch-off button!! Who wants to be interrupted when enjoying a meal with friends, or at the theatre! I find text messaging is also GREAT. My son texted me on Sunday that he'd arrived safely in Amsterdam. A quick, 3-word, very low cost and very welcome communication. It's illegal in Australia to use a mobile phone while driving. Cellphones are fine. It's some people who are thoughtless and rude.
