I want to thank Chris for giving me this idea for a topic.
What traditions do you practice in your family? Big or small. And what kind of quirky things do you do as well?
In my family, when eating angelfood cake and there's a new person around, it's traditional (and bad manners!) to walk by and smash their piece of cake flat. I don't know why we do this, it's something our parents used to do. The poor new person doesn't know how to react.
We crack Easter eggs on each others heads.
We celebrate our Christmas and open presents on Christmas Eve.
My closest cousin and I grew up together and up until her mother died, we were always given one identical Christmas gift.
When we were kids and someone was snoring, the adults would give us a pickle to put in the snoring person's mouth. Again I have no idea why and I don't remember ever asking. I'm surprised nobody choked.
We still break Thanksgiving wishbones from the year before. The fresh one will be hung on a cupboard knob until the following Thanksgiving. I grew up thinking everyone kept a wishbone in their kitchen.
I keep a horseshoe on the front of the house. It was given to me by my aunt in Oklahoma. It's painted red and I keep it turned sideways because that denotes there's a witch in the house.
That's all I can think of for now. It's kind of tricky because we do these things without realizing they're traditions.
What do you guys do?

Good topic Red!
We don't really have that many family traditions, though we will always visit my grans house just before Christmas to exchange gifts and have a huge feast. And on Christmas Day we open our stockings together, and then go into the main room to open the rest of our pressies. Oh and dinner is always the same with usually the same film on tv being shown hahaha.

When we have guests for dinner we always say the following before making a start;
"A Muckle Feast and Drink
Ta all them folks not owa cliver tonight
All them wiv spewed their third bad pint
And ta all wiv yarked up a dodgy, manking pie
Ta ahl in the sick room that lie.
It's not what one of em' would chose
Here's to wor muckle feast and wor muckle pile of booze".
Funny thing we don't get many people round these days:wah:
Paul.

On Easter eve, I put Easter eggs in everybody's shoe.
Before I have moved out of a home or apartment, I have placed a wishbone in the kitchen for the new inhabitants to find....for good luck.
My husband and I say. "I love you" to each other after the light's turned off and we are cozy together in bed. :-4

Taking pictures with the nittany lion up in State College PA with the whole family (or who ever is there) have pictures taken of me as a baby on it....
Christmas morning, The boys and I always read the story of Jesus being born and pray before we open the first present. ( I like that tradition!:-4-The ex and I started that when oldest son was little, so he's done it as long as he can remember....)
On New Years Day, you have to have pork, sauerkraut and dumplins, or you'll have bad luck the rest of the year.
On New Years Eve (new tradition only about 4 years old) We go over to my parents' house and eat and drink and be merry (no alcohol) we play games, sing karokee and then at midnight we eat Klondike bars and toast a non-alcholic drink (which used to be sparkling cider, but it was nasty....so we drink soda now-in wine cups....:wah:) and then we break the peppermint pig, its a solid pig made of candy and comes with a little hammer to break it with....the kids LOVE to beat on it, everyone takes turns like a pinata...'cept its a candy pig in a bag on the table, and then we eat it, and party some more and crash!!:guitarist
Minks, we do the same thing with baby's first b-day...have photos to prove it!:)

I'm so glad this thread has taken off! Thanks for making it fun.
I remembered another one. When we give someone a new wallet or purse, we must put a penny in it first.

that reminded me, we always return a dish with something in it, well not always, but I try to....a friend of mine told me that one time, only because she wanted my home made bread (which she got of course)......but I have done that before.
