Beatniks.

What are they really? Or should I say were? Do they still exist? Can anyone here enlighten me on this subject? I've been reading up about it somewhat but Wiki, et al; isn't telling me about it the way someone who was involved could.

Was it all about the literary world? Was Kerouac really the start of it all?

What was the foundation, the main tenets of Beatism? I am drawing the idea that Beatniks were the original Hippies only with better hygiene; am I close?

Beatniks were poets, artists, musicians and writers that were not into conventional life styles. They lived in certain enclaves like Grenich Village, N.Y. They had a style of dress and manner that precluded the later Hippie Culture of the 60's.

When I think of beatniks, I think of bongo drums, snapping fingers, no socks, lots of coffee, poetry...............late 50's, early 60's....

Question:"What are you rebelling against?"

Answer: "What you got?"
