Actually this isn't surprising to me. I would swear that motor vehicles exceed speeds at which most people can safely react to outside stimuli, and when you combine that with the comfort of the modern automobile a sort of torpor sets in.
I include myself in the above "most people", so I assure you this isn't just another cyclist-with-an-axe rant.
