Having Second thoughts!!! -Help

Well I went & did it! Today, I finally gave in to AT&T to let them replace my dial-up internet with Highspeed DSL internet. Starting hopefully on Friday, if I get everything hooked up correctly! My current dial-up is forever getting hung up when downloading pages, or simplist of things & can not at all even begin to play any videos you guys post. So hopefully it will be a good thing!

Now here comes the second thoughts/Questions forgot to ask AT&T rep. (I'm not at all computter savy, so . . . )

I now have AOL IPS. I guess I will need to get a new screen name, & will I loose all my email address book info? And also lose fovoriate places saved? Any way to swap it over?

There are several AOL on line games my wife likes to play, does anyone know if they can be accessed from another IPS?

AT&T took over our phone company here in New England, as well as our phone company in Florida. Therefore, will I be able to use my new AT&T screen name in both locations, like I can presently do on AOL?

FG question. Will I be able to still log on here as Cars, or will that change to?

(knowledgeable inputs appreciated/welcomed! Thanks.)

Hi Cars! :)

When I switched to DSL, I didn't lose anything. I still have my primary eMail through the phone company if I want to use it and it didn't affect my screen names or logging into sites at all. Including FG. I was still RedGlitter. I don't know about the online games though...I'm not that familiar with AOL.

We recently switched everything to our phone company umbrella package.

We're still having trouble with our regular phone service.

Our cordless phone are not compatible to this new high tec equipment.

So we had the phone tec out the other day - I asked him how do you know if the cordless phone will be compatible? Answer, good question..??:-2

I use the tethered phone and I can hear a radio station - so I call the tec again.

Tec said, unplug all your phones - process of elimination.

I have about 18 phones - fax - for this process of elimination - I collect stuff - some coca cola phones some rotary & some worthless cordless phones...

If the Tec comes out to service this problem he'll charge $85.00 for the house call.

So - I would recommend during your change over - have all your phones- fax etc. checked before the Tec leaves. We did something still is not right

Our computer service is faster

Just don't call me...:wah:

Cars, most providers will allow you to keep AOL.

All you have to do is upgrade your AOL to broadband.

But then you're paying for two providers.

All AOL is really is a gateway to the internet.

It's not necessary by any means.

AOL uses a "skinned" version of Internet Explorer.

You should be able to transfer you favorites right into I.E.

You're email can be backed up as well and the imported into a standalone program.

$84 please.

(I'm cheaper than tech support)

Threadjacker.:sneaky:

Make sure all of your phone connections have DSLfilters

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL_filter

If not, your install tech is looking for an excuse to make $85 off you.

You're coca cola phones some rotary and worthless cordless phones will most likely not place nice with the new technology.

Are you using a wireless router? If so it's more than likely 2.4 GHZ.

So are your phones You can only use 900mhz cordless phones.

My bet is this guy either doesn't know what he's doing or the phone company wanst more money from you.

Nice house? Mercedes in the driveway?

Unscrupulous techs see this as a cash cow.

I saw it so many times as a cable modem installer.

They'd spend weeks, months "trying to track down the problem".

And charging the homeowner every time they knocked on the door.

I opened a little side business with one of the cable installers.

I'd leave my card and tell the folks we'll fix it in two hours for $100 flat fee.

And we did.

:D

JD

Thanks

I'll start with unplugging the novelty phones - then using the filters

We have a main filter into the house that they installed in that package deal we got.!!!

Your right the Tec was more interested in my Coca Cola junk etc..

Thanks again - wish you were here - we're not high tec.??

Thanks everyone for your replies. There's another thing I didn't even think about, my cordless 2.4 gh phones. Including my answering phone too, wow I'm now stuck with 5 cordless phones that won't work on the DSL line!!! Where do you get these filters? "They" (AT&T) are just sending a kit (new modem & filter & disc) via UPS tomorrow or Wednesday with an install info disc, that I'm supposed follow to do all the work myself! The rep never said anything about a service guy to set things up! :-2 I'm screwed!!!

Step on the brakes there, buddy!

Read what you posted!

(AT&T) are just sending a kit (new modem & filter & disc)

Think I found your filter. :D

The 2.4 GHZ phones will only argue with 2.4 GHZ routers.

If you've no need for one then no sweat.

If you do I point you in the right direction.

You're all set.

That might have been a tricky thing to fix without physically seeing the router.

Wish I could get back in the biz.

I was making good money back then.

OK JD, please bare with me, I'm a computer nerd, not a weenie! AT&T is sending a modem & filter that's supposed to plug into the Hard drive. Since the modem & filter will only be at the hard drive, do I then need filters for all the 5 cordless phones in all the other rooms? :-2

For the 1st few days after sitting down you need to strap yourself into your chair. Use anything, a belt, rope, duct tape, whatever you have laying around.

And a helmet and goggles.

After you get used to the speed you just run with the wind buddy.

I still wear my goggles though. Mainly for the cool factor.

The filter plugs into the telephone wall jack. You may just be able to get away with the phone nearest the computer. If there are issues, yes, you will need filters on all lines.

Or you could just try Nomad's suggestion.

I have dsl and the only phone line I have a filter on is the one for my computer. Going from dial up to dsl, your only regret will be not doing it sooner. Dial up would make me crazy now.

Ok thanks again JD, & now Nommie, & Peg too! I've got the helmet, goggles, & duct tape all ready, so I'm all set there! As for seperate filters, will have to wait & see as JD said. And as for dial up, I've had it (AOL) for over 10 years now, up until maybe a little over a year & a half ago it wasn't all that bad. But now, it seems everything needs high speed to open & or even run videos.

Just last week, I booked our upcoming flight to KC on line, & put in all the info, selected our "8" seat assignments for all four flights, with the excessive lag time inbetween the steps it was going on an hour. Then at the last step when I hit purchase, it "hung-up", frooze for about 10 minutes, and then I just watched the images on the screen disintagrate right before my eyes. I was pis**d as well as determined, & did it all over 2 more times until it finally went through!! Total time 3-1/2 hours! :wah:

Hi all, well after one hour installing cables, filters, & installation software, I then spent over "three" gruling hours on the phone with an AT&T DSL rep. Disabling IP's & then enabling IP's, over & over again, reformatting software, and all other kinds of things.

I finally now have DSL, but am not all that thrilled with it at present! Maybe it is going to take some getting used to. For one thing this new system "does not" tell me verbally I have mail when I first log on, & or the during time on line as AOL did. I still have not cancelled my AOL account, & or removed the dedicated seperate dial up phone for it!

So I'll give it a week or so to see if "we" can adjust to this change, as it is difficult for us to adapt to a new system, after having AOL for over "10" years! It's like giving up an old friend!? So DSL, you'd better shape up or ship out!:)

I hate our new system - I/we should've stayed paying seperate bills - this combo unbrella package isn't working for me.

Its been 2 months or so - I don't like it - this system - no bells or whistles.

you should still be able to log on as cars. but its easier just to steal the neighbors wireless connection like me and not have to pay a dime.;)

Right Patsy, I liked AOL verbally telling me "You have mail", when I first signed on, & then even while on line if new mail came in it again said "you have mail"!

Also I don't like the homepage screen, don't like the reading mail system, don't like the yahoo "games" they offer, and all for the DSL "speed" which is noticeably faster, but not as fast as I was led to believe. It says to wait up to 10 days for optimum connection speed, we'll see!

(I have not yet cancelled AOL, & or removed the dedicated dial-up line for AOL, in the event we choose to revert back to it next week)

Our phones are still screwed up

I've unplugged all of them - put individual filters on Fax Machine, and phone with answering machine and one on the cordless phone.

Theres also a main filter - I still have noise - and difficulty hearing the caller.

I hate this system - its frustrating.

Start from basics :-

unplug every device from all of your extensions.

Plug in a filter to your primary socket and use a handset to see if there's any noise.

If there is, try another handset and another filter - if it's still there then you have a faulty line.

Plug your router / modem unto the filter - does the noise start? If so try another filter. If it's still there then it's probably a faulty router.

You now have a working system. Add a filter and device to each extension checking the result each time. When the noise appears you will know the faulty device.

Well now, thanks for asking Peg! :) DSL is noticably faster than dial-up, but I might have screwed things up somewhat what. I was trying to free up some space on harddrive so I clicked clean out/delete temp files. Things seemed to get "slower" after that!!! :wah: That was 3 days ago, & now it seems it's building up the necessary temp files needed for the favoriate things we use, & getting faster again.

Anyway, I was led to believe I needed to change my AOL email addy to AT&T addy & had to switch to AT&T yahoo. (I don't/didn't like AT&T yahoo!) Then a friend told me I could still have/use AOL on my new AT&T DSL line. So I did switch AOL dial-up to AOL Broadband, & now all is good in AOL land!!! ;)

(Previously on dial-up, I could never play any videos anyone posted, now using DSL I can, that's a big plus right there alone!)

That must be the understatement of the year!

On dial up I could get 56kb/sec, on DSL I get 12mb/sec - that's a cool 215 times faster :-)
