Don't know if anyone watched Alice (tv series) but Flo always said this and I never knew what Grits were. This is an American thing, yes?

I also don't know what fritters are.

are there any other odd food references that people might help clear up?

So do you know what grits are now?

Just wondering, if not, (they are, if you live in the south) hominy ground fine and served like hash browns (with your eggs) or covered with butter, milk and sugar kinda like cream of wheat cereal.

My mom made them from crushed corn, flour, milk and seasonings. She would drop like a tablespoon in hot oil and cook like doughnuts....

Grits are typically U.S. southern breakfast food usually served up with eggs.

It's like a corn porridge similar to polenta.

Fritters are anything battered and deep fried, typically apple, banana, corn. This also has it's origins in the U.S. south.

When I'm in a diner I always order one grit please.

so these are in a bowl, these grits? polenta is thick, just goes on a plate but if you add milk to it, it would get on the eggs and then your food would be... touching!!

Grits remind me of malt-o-meal. Bleh! But it's not just a breakfast food. Unfortunatly it's made it's way into lunch and supper meals too.! Dam Southerners! :wah:

they call smoked ham something different in England.

Can't remember what it was. I recall looking at it and thinking it looked sort of like ham but none of the words were reassuring.

I thought Grits were Brits who moved to Germany.

Don't forget pot liquor (or pot "likker",) the broth left over from cooking greens and sometimes beans. In which you properly dunk corn bread or biscuits.

And polk sallet (American Pokeweed) which is a type of greens.

And corn pone which is a type of cornbread that's pan fried.

Hushpuppies which are rounded balls of batter that are deep fried.

No real Southerner eats grits for anything other than breakfast. Don't blame the faux southern woes of Texas on the rest of us. I'll never forget how many times I was "accused" of being Southern when I lived in Houston. Even though Houston was 715 miles south of where I had just lived.

We have smoked and unsmoked ham, smoked and unsmoked bacon and smoked and unsmoked gammon so I'm not too sure what your thinking of - possibly some of the foreign hams that are finding their way into our supermarkets?

Potato fritters are sometimes called scallops

There are innumerable names for various types of offal - the only one I can think of that wouldn't translate across the pond would be faggots - meatballs made from pork offal.

Other than those we use the propper names for all our food :wah:

they are called "smacks" where I live.

Scalloped potatoes are sliced and cooked in the oven with onion, cream and cheese

I live in the deep south..and i can tell ya no respectable fish fry would be complete without grits...and grits with sliced tomatoes or stewed tomatoes is a popular winter side dish...for breakfast..grits with one or two fried eggs flopped righton top..usually over easy...so when you bust em the yellow runs all over the grits..you use the grits and your toast to catch the yellow....
