Could someone please tell me what these things are for? I think they're pretty but I don't understand what they're used for.

Here in the UK when we go to the supermarket we have to put a one pound coin into a slot in the shopping trolley to be able to use it ( releases a security chain) These coins clip on your keys like a keyring and act like a pound coin in the trolley so if you have no £1coins they can be handy. Mine has a pic of one of these:)

I didn't know you guys had to pay to use a shopping cart. Ours our free here (as far as I know anyway) but at some of our malls they offer child strollers that have a security chain/coin set-up. I think the tokens are cool. I might get one off eBay just because they're pretty! :wah: Thanks again! That's had me curious for a long time.

We don't pay as such, when you return the trolley you put the security chain back in and the coin comes back out.



A lot of supermarkets in town centres use this type of trolley 'cos they have a habit of wandering off on their own!!

Oh, so if you use those cute tokens you can get it back? Or a coin? That's good. I thought it was another way to make money off customers. Fun idea!

Yeah, they are to stop people walking home with the trolley, or kids taking them and throwing them in rivers etc, before the token system that used to happen in Britain a lot, and here as well in Ireland, I guess we are just natural criminals, you have to nail everything down. :wah:

Actually its true, I remember when I lived in Germany I was always amused that in Munich people didn't use locks on their bikes, you could get on the U-Bahn without buying a ticket (you were supposed to though), and there were vending machines for cigarettes and beer on the streets. Man if you had them in Dublin they would be pulled up out of the ground and people would run off with them. Actually people do rob ATMs by tying chains to them and then attaching the chain to an SUV and pulling them out of the wall, money and all. What that says about us, I choose not to ponder too much.

Yeah they did it up the road from me a few years ago, they used a Toyota Landcruiser to pull the thing out of the wall from a Petrol Station and they got it up on the back of a Lorry (truck), and they blocked the local Garda (police) station by driving a stolen container lorry in front of it to block the police cars getting out! But the police came in from other towns and caught them somewhere on the motorway heading up to Dublin! The mentallers!

Its a good advertisement for the capabilities of the landcruiser though, thats a powerful SUV!

Around here, we have a store chain called Aldis. They are the one and only place I've ever seen that had the chain thing on grocery carts. You put a quarter in to unlock it, and you get your quarter back when you lock it back up.

Don't laugh at me but I went to eBay and bought a token that said RED in a square. For whatever Red Square is. I'm kinda envious. I want to have one of those neato things on my keys too.

I like that trolley system, Peg. Think it would solve a lot of problems here. The local lake is regularly dredged for trolleys. Also, about half a mile from the big supermarket is a village of university student residences, linked by a bicycle path. The students get their groceries and ferry them back to the residences in the trolleys (in Australia one walks a lot!). The supermarket acknowledges that these trolleys travel - and has installed a trolley leaving area at the student residences, where they recollect them. Civilised, I suppose. As fer pulling ATMs out of the wall, hey Galbers, I never thought of that??!!~ WOW. Now who do I know who owns a SUV?

Doesn't work any more - all aTMs now come with dye canisters that break on shock and ruin the notes. Also indelible mark anyone who tries to open the ATM.

Yep! We have one of those too...and I was confused...I know I know....big shock to everyone...how that would work...I actually hesitated shopping there, because it confused me...I finally faced my fear and shopped there for the first time this weekend and saved a bunch of money!! You have to pay for your bags also...or use their boxes for free....but still...a dozen of eggs for .69....I'll use a box for free to take it home!!

If thats the same Aldi that we have here then thats because its a German-run chain and they must be using the same procedures that they do over here in Europe, very handy for cheap food is Aldi I have to say, oh and cheap tools and stuff like that.

This reminds me, we used to have shopping trolley races when I was a kid, which basically involved getting a couple of these things to the top of a hill, and then getting in them and rolling down the road in them, the results were usually painful I remember.

YES it is Aldi...and our store is small, not a huge selection, but yes, the prices are GREAT!

We used to do the shopping cart races too..I remember always wanting to push instead of riding....little did I know how smart I was....flying out of the cart when it hit the cement dividers wasn't fun for my friends!! OOOOPS:o

them trolleys come in handy as transport home after a night on the lash and no money left..........so im told:driving:

Yep its definetly Aldi, the stores are smallish alright, probably very small by american standards as I am reliably told that U.S. supermarkets are ENORMOUS! But its a handy enough place, it has a rival chain called "Lidl" which is very similar, in fact the 2 chains were founded by two German brothers who fell out and became buisiness rivals apparently.

There would be a revolt of epidemic proportions here in the US land of the free and home of the brave if we were made to rent our trolleys.

We wouldnt have it and Im sure more than one store would burn to the ground and the people would lay seige on the oppressors.

It would be a cold day in hell the next time they tried anything like that.

I know from experience that this already happens at least in some New York State shopping malls. You put a quarter in the slot, got out the trolley, used it, then drove it back into the system and got your quarter back. My girlfriend, being gentle hearted, used to leave hers out so somebody who didn't have a quarter could use it.

people only do that in the UK when they have managed to wedge a foreign coin into the slot and cant get it back out :wah::wah::wah:

The number of times i have put the trolley back in the right place but forgotten to push it right into the trolley in front and get my pound back!

Whoever goes to the trolley park after me must be well pleased with my stupidity!

And doing that at least once a fortnight gets expensive!

Tescos, being the only supermarket round here that does not use the pound in the slot routine, get a lot of custom - but also a lot of fines for littering when their trolies go walkabout.

I dont think yummy mummy trolleys with the kiddie bit in the front has a coin slot either but I may be wrong
