I have just got back from the hospital and have found out that my Temporomandibular (Jaw) Joint is knackered, the surgery is not always successful so here is what I have to do;
Rest the jaw as much as possible
Eat Soft food and avoid tough meat (get your minds out of the gutters girls

) and crusty bread, no chewing gum
Stifle yawns and avoid wide mouth opening
Do not bite nails or lips, or chew pencils
Stop clenching and grinding
As if the above was not bad enough he then said
Stop talking so much
I went on to tell the Doctor that I don't talk very much at all when he said "You have done quite well for the last 10 minutes" Cheeky thing!!!!
That naughty Jimbo has been praying a bit too hard for my liking :wah:

It's forever :-1 It will stop it getting worse but it'll never get better than what it is like now, the worst thing is the cracking noise it makes as I eat, Jim and the kids send me into another room when I eat

He said that total success was about 20%, he said he'd be willing to operate but after that last Surgeon ballsed up I wouldn't settle for anything less than 100% success

wow.
is it too late for you to start looking into wholistic care as an alternative or suppliment, Suzy? It sounds to me like the physicians are isolating each problem and not seeing the whole picture.

A hug for you, Suzy.
Give verbal communication a rest for awhile then. Use you fingers, hands, or your eyes.

I have TMJ. The oral surgeon wanted me to sleep in a mouth guard. This was 15 years ago. He said the cost of the mouthguard was about $1500 and then he couldn't guarantee my bite would be right. I went out, bought a football mouthguard, dipped it in hot water to soften it, bit into it, and slept with it in at night. He was quite impressed, it worked well, and I saved a ton of money.

Big hugs to you Suzy...I feel for you sweetie!!
Only thing I can relate to it, when I was around 9 years old I broke my jaw in three places, had to have my jaw wired shut, this was during the summer....I couldn't talk or eat...Mom tried to put all kinds of stuff in the blender for me...everyone enjoyed the fact I couldn't talk.
More hugs to you sweetie!:-4

I know I have a terrible habit of clenching my teeth when I'm under pressure. I catch myself doing it a lot at work. Not a good thing to do with TMJ.

My jaw makes popping sounds when I'm eating. Worse when it's something like steak that requires more effort. It gets better for time periods then worse again. Hopefully you'll notice an improvement after taking it easy for a bit.
They thought braces would correct the jaw problem when I was younger but it didn't work. I clench my teeth a lot but don't grind. Relaxation techniques create a noticeable difference in the amount of jaw tension.
