I was talking to my mate Meg today about Brussels sprouts. Usually we talk about sexy things like lingerie, pillow fights, vaginas, and sex, but today we talked about vegetables. See, i loves the Sprouts of Brussels, and she hates them and i was trying to convince her that if they were cooked properly, she'd like them. She found this seriously questionable.
Her hatred of the sprouts goes back to the year 1978. She was 10 years old and dished herself up at dinner. She thought that the b-sprouts looked adorable, so she assumed they'd also be delicious. That's how your brain works when you're 10. Meg took three of them.
La la la la, eating her dinner!
She tasted the tiny green cabbages and decided they were awful. Meg planned to leave them on her plate. Her Dad had other ideas. For some reason he got pretty pissed about her not liking those little brussels, and he said she had to sit at the table until she ate them all, and by god if that was well into the night then so be it! He meant business.
The thing is, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and Meg was a stubborn little brat.
She honestly can't remember who gave in first, but remembers that she never put another Brussels sprout on her plate ever again.
I dont know about you, but she thinks making your child eat b-sprouts might actually be just cause for calling that child line. :wah::wah::wah:
p.s. Im having Brussels with my lamb dinner tonight:wah::wah:

Brussels Sprouts, well I am a great admirer of the little fellas, in fact I believe I once wrote a poem dedicated to Brussels sprouts known as "Ode to a sprout". A classic of its genre, "vegetable poetry".

I don't mind sprouts too much now, but detested them as a kid and my mum would always put them with the sunday roast.
I told her i liked coliflour and raw carrots and mixed veg, but that still didn't satisfy her, she would still put sprouts and those horrid green beans on my plate :-5 :wah:

Me either, Kay.
My parents did it to me with the meatloaf. It's like a punishment, well...why force a kid to eat something he doesn't like? I've never understood that.

I had a grade school principle do that to me twice. I wasn't feeling well and he made me eat anyways. To this day, I won't eat salmon or tomatoes.

I have a nephew that would agree with your friend Chezzi-kins!!
Okay deep breff....little bit of a stroy: about 11 years ago, I was babysitting my nephew and his sister, I was preggy with my youngest son, and it was my oldest sons birthday, we had brussels sprouts with dinner (and we had JUST got my oldest to tolerate them and actually like them) We told all the kids that we would like them to eat 2 brussells a piece...well everyone (except the nephew) was fine with that, we even had fun watching my neice hold her nose while she ate them!:) Well my nephew (6 or 7 at the time) didn't eat anything green, he survived on pizza, grilled cheese and hotdogs....honest.....so he threw a major temper tantrum, and he ate it, pretended to chew and then proceeded to throw it up as well.....:-5:-5:-5
We didn't mean for all that drama ...but it happened, and the kid never came to my house for dinner again.....Thankfully, he turned out okay despite his Aunt and Uncle's child abuse!

i know families which have brussels sprouts at Christmas every year because its traditional - even though nobody ever eats them!
My brother-in-laws father came to Christmas dinner once and ate Baked beans with potatoes, that's all he ever eats.
I think he is missing out on a loveley dinner with cooked vegetablesin winter, or a nice refreshing salad in summer, but he wont try anything new.

I think Tombstone should make people specify in their profiles if they like brussel sprouts or not. I mean, there are just somethings you need to know about a person
I am thinking about setting up a web page so people can search their area for brussel sprout lovers. Its a safety issue. It could affect house prices in the area too

Golden-Crusted Brussels Sprouts Recipe
This is the only way to eat brussels sprouts: cut in half and cooked until deliciously tender inside and perfectly brown and crusted on the outside.
Use brussels sprouts that are on the small size and tightly closed. You can finish these with many different types of cheese but I tend to go for Parmesan when the weather is good. I trade that in for heavier cheeses like gruyere or Gouda in colder weather. I finished them off with some toasted hazelnuts the other night - delicious!
24 small brussels sprouts
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for rubbing
fine-grain sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup grated cheese of your choice
Wash the brussels sprouts well. Trim the stem ends and remove any raggy outer leaves. Cut in half from stem to top and gently rub each half with olive oil, keeping it intact (or if you are lazy just toss them in a bowl with a glug of olive oil).
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in your largest skillet over medium heat. Don’t overheat the skillet, or the outsides of the brussels sprouts will cook too quickly. Place the brussels sprouts in the pan flat side down (single-layer), sprinkle with a couple pinches of salt, cover, and cook for roughly 5 minutes; the bottoms of the sprouts should only show a hint of browning. Cut into or taste one of the sprouts to gauge whether they’re tender throughout. If not, cover and cook for a few more minutes.
Once just tender, uncover, turn up the heat, and cook until the flat sides are deep brown and caramelized. Use a metal spatula to toss them once or twice to get some browning on the rounded side. Season with more salt, a few grinds of pepper, and a dusting of grated cheese. While you might be able to get away with keeping a platter of these warm in the oven for a few minutes, they are exponentially tastier if popped in your mouth immediately.
Serves 4.
Make this and then tell me you dont like brusseys:p:p

Sorry, I hate, loathe, despise and plain out DON'T LIKE brussels sprouts.
We were forced to eat everything no matter what and my mom was NOT
a very good cook. She overcooked everything which was part of the
problem, she'd buy CANNED spinach and serve up this GLOP on your
plate and I just could half upchuck just thinking about it!
As a grown up, I've come to love some veggies, like asparagus, and
green beans, and spinach, and broccoli, that I used to hate as a kid
but brussels sprouts? NEVER AGAIN IN MY LIFETIME.

I think you brussell sprout haters are missing out. Years ago everything was over cooked and sloppy.
These days we dont over cook our veg, personally i like it cooked well but not sloppy, I dont like my veg dipped in boiling water for 5 mins whether it preserves the colour, flavour or vitamins or not.
Those of you with steamers, go buy a bag of srouts, cook them for 10-20 mins, fork testing after 10 mins and taste as you go and I reckon you could be converted again.
