Immigrants and Pell Grant?

This is one of those things that I got in my email as a forward. Usually I junk them but since we have teachers here, I am hoping they can shed some light on whether or not there is any factuality in this piece. Thank you.

Do you know that we have

adult students at the school

where I teach who are not US

citizens and who get the PELL

grant, which is a federal grant

(no pay back required)

plus other federal grants to

go to school? One student

from the Dominican Republic

told me that she didn't want

me to find a job for her after

she finished my program,

because she was getting

housing from our housing

department and she was

getting PELL grant which

paid for her total tuition and

books, plus money left over.

She was looking into WAIT

which gives students a

CREDIT CARD for gas to

come to school, and into

CARIBE which is a special

program for immigrants and

it pays for child care and all

sorts of needs while they

go to school or training. The

one student I just mentioned

told me she was not going to

be a US citizen because she

plans to return to

the Dominican Republic

someday and that she "loves

HER country." I asked her

if she felt guilty taking what

the US is giving her and then

not even bothering to become

a citizen and she told me that

it doesn't bother her, because

that is what the money is

there for! I asked the CARIBE

administration about their

program and if you ARE a US

citizen, yu don't qualify for

their program. And all the

while, I am working a full day,

my son-in-law works more

than 60 hours a week, and

everyone in my family works

and pays for our education.

Something is wrong here.

You know i thought it was only the UK that did stuff like that, the last i heard was that Asylum seekers over here were intitled to IVF treatment ...yet if i want it, i have to pay .:-5:-5:-5

im sure half of this stuff is made up tbh.

Asylum seekers arent any more entitled to IVF than anybody else.

If theyve actually been granted asylum then theyll be entitled to NHS services as much as anyone else, but considering most people dont actually get IVF at all on the NHS, but theyre considering offering one free cycle, I dont think its gona be a case of asylum seekers only.

Sounds like some bullshit from a BNP pamphlet more than anything, or something a mate of a mate heard someone say down the pub.

Nothing is mentioned about illegal aliens in the op. Permanent legal residents (green card holders, we call them) are generally open to any programs available to citizens, I believe. I'll have to do a little research to say more.

12) Are there rules for immigrants to qualify for a Pell Grant?

Yes. To qualify for a Pell Grant you must be able to live and attend school legally in the United States as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or eligible non-citizen.

If you are an eligible non-citizen, you must be a:

U.S. permanent resident (has Alien Registration Card or I-551);

Conditional permanent resident (has I-551C Card);

Refugee;

Asylum grantee;

Parolee; or

Cuban-Haitian entrant with an Arrival Departure Record (I-94) from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).

The CARIBE Program is an Adult and Community Education project that provides free English language, GED, and Hi-Tec vocational training to recent Cuban, Haitian, and other entrants with refugee or asylee status. With an original goal of 200 student enrollments, this grant funded-program has counted over 7,500 individual enrollments since its inception, and has served students from 23 countries. Our goal is to recruit and serve all eligible adult refugees and entrants in Hillsborough County.

I couldn't find anything about WAIT credit card progam.

Educating people from volatile 3rd world nations and having them return to improve their homelands is an investment in the future prosperity of their countries and ours, imo.

Thank you Accountable for giving us that info. :)

What is the difference between a refugee and an illegal immigrant? I thought refugee was the same as one seeking asylum...? *confuzzled* :o

its not illegal to be an asylum seeker though. the term illegal asylum seeker is oftne used wrongly.

If they are denied asylum but stay, then i guess theyd be illegal, or someone who enters the country illegally but its not a case of seeking asylum or refugee status, i guess that would be illegal too

Refugees have been granted refuge by the government for whatever reason, which gives them legal status. I think that's the only difference but I could easily be wrong.
