some of you may know i had a heart attack a few days before Christmas...it was out of nowhere and a huge shock! i had worked 12 hours the night before and had been in some action , no problem. (i had no heart history, always been very strong and healthy.) it required surgery... now i am doing cardiac rehab, otherwise known as medeival torture. i am the youngest person in these sessions with the rack and iron maiden, etc. soooooooo today i see my doctor, who is excellent, he DID save my life. my MI was deemed job/stress-related and i am out on workers' comp. ~there is no way i can do my 12-hour a day job at this time, even though i feel well. i tire easily. but i was totally shocked today when the Dr. said i cannot go back on my job for at least 3 more months!

i am getting many emails from fellow officers/friends saying "stay out, don't come back, we miss you a lot but don't want to see you have a fatal one on the job." (we are subject to all hell breaking loose anytime.) so i am wondering if my career, which i love, is over. whether i should just wait and see what happens in the 3 months, or take an early retirement?

i had quite realistic plans for advancement! i am upset and my job is a big part of my identity. *sigh*

Wow LC, what a tough decision. I think you should absolutely follow doctors orders, and wait and see. Isn't it a bit early to be worried about what your physical condition will be 3 months from now? Your job isn't in jeopardy if you don't go back right away, is it? And when you do go back, can't you do light duty for a while? It sounds to me a bit premature to be talking early retirement, especially if it's not what you want...

From reading many of your posts it is apparent that being an officer is very important to you and pervades many areas of your life. Not so many people are lucky enough to find a job/career that they enjoy and in that respect you are very fortunate. However, if the doctors have told you that your heart problems can be attributed to job related stress, I would suggest you consider a new line of work. From what I understand, once you have suffered from a heart attack you are more susceptible to future attacks. No job is worth dying for.

On the other hand you do put your life on the line each day on the job anyway. Either way, I guess I'd just wait the three months, see what the doctor says, and then make my final decision. In the meantime, take care of yourself and try to enjoy your time off.

Hey Babyrider, i am a type AA...i have to worry RIGHT THIS MINUTE! :-5 maybe why i had the heart attack huh? there is no such thing as light duty, either i can put on my uniform and gun or not. desk jobs are civilian jobs on my Dept. you and Enigma are wise, wait it out i guess.

Hey, it sucks waiting, I know. I'm still waiting to hear about my job. But Enigma has a good point. Enjoy the time off, use it to get strong again, and make sure you take care of yourself. We are all pulling for you!

Some of the most amazing things have happened to people when they became ill or injured. It seems like a horrible thing when it was really an opportunity to accomplish something else. I would try and think, while you wait, of what you could accomplish because you are at home that you would never have had the time or inclination to do if you were busy at work. There is opportunity in everything. Write a book. Learn to paint. These are things I would do. Think of yours.

Sorry to hear about your heart attack. Lot's of folks don't know that women are actually more prone to heart problems than men. Lady Cop, I think I would be inclined to retire on a disabilty pension (stress related) and if you need additional income, find something way less stressful than law enforcement.

Koan and Lon , sage advice as always...i have meant to write a book for years, was going to wait until i moved to England. and i used to paint, a la Gauguin. but not in a long time. avid reader too. just get restless easily, need some stimulation, i.e. the job. cops tend to be adrenalin junkies. have been all my life, skiing, SCUBA...it is very difficult to feel debilitated all of a sudden after a lifetime of adventure. i think coming to terms with that is the hardest thing. as i said, it's an identity thing, i turn into wonder-woman when i put on my uniform! LOL... suddenly finding oneself in a cardiologist's office is hard to absorb since i was never sick in my life. i suppose i have to get my mind wrapped around a new reality i don't like. i do know i have three months to figure it out and hope i don't go mad! thankyou for your considered replies!....Lon, most women die with their first one! i had first-class care or i would have.also was in A1 condition. i had to call my own 911, make a couple phone calls, and turn on my scanner waiting for ambulance...i knew i was in terrible trouble. my LT. heard about it before i got to hospital and was there waiting for me. rescue guys had called the Sheriff when they recognized me.

I am sure that your cardiologist will confirm that stress is bad and exercise is good for recovering heart patients. No reason that you should curtail diving or any other physical acitivities that you enjoy. I'll just betcha that one year after turning in your badge, you will be in the best shape of your whole life.

lady cop, I sympathize with you as I know how you feel about the "identity" thing!
As you know I just "retired" two weeks ago, and am "lost" trying to find out who I am now without my "Design Engineering Managers Position". I was in charge of 167 people, now I am in charge of just me? It is a strange feeling, one that I am not comfortable with yet, and am having difficulty coping with. :wah:
In time I hope/ believe I will adjust, I'd better!
As for "your" current situation, you may want to ask yourself do you really want to go back to a job that as you already mentioned is a "12" hour long adrelinen pumping- STRESS RELATED haul- "each and every single day"? It seems like that might be a real "risky" thing to do, and even most likely would eventually shorten your life by many years! Hope you decide to stay around with us for many years to come! We need you here!!!! :-6

Hey LC..
Glad to hear that you are recovering nicely. Now .. as far as the 3 months goes take the time to evaluate what you want. I can relate to the adrenalin junkie syndrome pretty well. But you also have other things to consider, like your SO. I am pretty sure that he would like to have you around for awhile.. as we here in the garden do too. But who knows.. in 3 months the Dr. could say go for it.. and you could be back in the LC mobile busting the do badders in Fl. Speaking for myself, I have slowed down a bit.. Slopes that used to take 3 turns now take 4.. Nice long downhills on the bicycle that I used to love at 45.. now are taken at 30, things like that. And I have really started to leave work at work.. a large help. Anyway.. continue getting stronger and better. Enjoy your time.. and be well...
P.S. Cars.. just stay busy. You will be fine.. I can see it already..

Thanks greydeadhead, it's friends like you here in the Garden that are actually helping me get through this tough time. (It's like a therapy for me, that I somehow need) I am keeping busy, attending Condo group meetings to discuss issues that affect us there, Bus & Boat trips signed up for to the casinos, got new "fishing rod kit" to catch the big ones, taking "golf lessons" so I can be a better golfer & contribute to the teams I'm on, morning walks before blazing "Florida Sun" hits, etc.

Cars and Greydeadhead,Lon and Koan, excellent advice. and Lotto, thankyou for saying such a sweet thing! i suppose there is no choice but wait and see. hey, i could be eaten by an alligator tomorrow! LOL....and the mention of my SO is a big factor, he is in England and i hope to move over there when i am out of the woods health-wise. i am getting excellent care here in the states, and the sheriff office covers it, so that's a consideration. but he KNOWS all the time what i am up to, how much i sleep, how late i am on this board...and i hear about it! he is not afraid to get on my case! (yeah, he's brave 4300 miles away!

) Cars, i hope you soon adjust to retirement, can you look at it as an extended vacation? sunshine :-6 and golf? i imagine it takes a while. the thing that bothers many people, i suspect, is the feeling of not being useful or needed anymore. but remember you ARE needed! so watch out for the gators in the water hazards.

Don't I know it. I felt the same when I was paralyzed by RA. Right out of the blue, too! Lucky for me some steroids and Arava are all I need to put me right.
Have you thought of being a teacher, possibly at the nearby college? It supplies the variety and challege very well, and you sound like you'd make an excellent teacher. Fun and outgoing. you'd still have your badge, too!

Stick with the program and do what the doctor says! Your brothers and sisters, obviously, have a lot of respect for you and they want to make sure that when you come back you will be able to withstand the rigours of your profession. What you need is patience. It is what will let you heal and healing properly is what everybody want to see you do!
Wait and you will know what you will do. Take your time and smell the roses. Heal yourself don't heel to the ideas that may cause you irreparable harm. Patience and time will let you know what you will do. You are far too versatile a person to think that there is nothing that you can do! Start doing some breathing excersises. It'll help pass the time and help regenerate your being.
Don't forget that Big Guy is watching over you and you will do whatever he says whether you want to or not. We love you lc, so, don't freak out. Do what is right for you, your family and your friends. You are far too valuable a person to blow it all away because you won't take the time to heal.

Lotto is right. You are who you are.
Take a cue from dogs. My dog, especially. Dogs don't worry.
My dog had her major surgery and it was tough on her for a while,
but she is still Tamsen. I knew that maybe 2-3 days post-op
when she did ferocious deep barks at the "bad ol' boy dog" next
door. Did it while her papa had a sling around her hind end, her
momma had a towel around the front, fentanyl patch and all.
Worry you can't go for 5 mile walks any more? Nah. Bound around
the park picking up sticks and enticing the momma to play? You
betcha. Worry about not being able to "shake" any more? Nah.
Grab a toy and give momma/papa an evening floor show? You
betcha.
Live more for the moment. Try not to worry. My husband would
probably smile at that, 'cause I'm a worry-wart. But you still
try.
Who you are is inside. It's your brain and your heart and yes,
your soul. Maybe you will be in uniform again and busting bad
guys. Maybe not. But you will still be YOU, Lady Cop.

All great advice from everyone here, LC. But this....THIS I really like.
What about becoming a PI? Or opening your own security company? You'll do great with whatever you choose to do. How can you miss with all this great support? Stay strong, and stay safe.

Ahh the question of LC's rehab. I am not qualified but I guess the doc may not be recommending 15 hours straight on a computer accompanied by large numbers of cigarettes. I will now await the ire of LC who will go batshit when she sees this.
LC is as tough as they come and hates the idea that she has to slow down, slow down she must. I have seen where she works and believe me just walking through the door is stressful. My health recommendation would be, take it easy, walk on crescent beach for a few months and get your strength back and then find a country with a temperate climate and settle down there with someone you love.
ps when I say she is a tough as they come, that is on the outside.
I am now off to don flak jacket and helmet to await LC awakening and beating the crap out of me.

I'll pretend that I put you up to it in an email. It was a joke and she'll come after my butt. I'll hide out shivering in Canada. She'll take pity on my woosy attitude( we won't tell her that I'n not wearing a coat) shake her fist at me and by the time she calms down it'll be safe for you to take off the flak jacket.
Once she calms down she'll see the wisdom of your words, move to temperate corner of the world with the someone she loves and there will be peace in the realm.
The only reason that I'm so cocky about it is because I know that they won't let her in the country with a gun, even if she is a cop.

Damn, been ignoring this thread cause I thought it was another rant about Florida voters.
I know a bit about a double A type being instantly, rudely, and ignominiously yanked from a totally satisfying position, then having to cope with a restricted life style. Grrrrrrrrr
Here's my suggestion, use this time to research alternative work that requires your expertise, and---since you seem determined to leave us for a less civilized place, and a strange looking English dude,--- are in good demand on a small island. some suggestions; childrens services, corporate security, insurance investigations, legal investigator, I'm sure once you start looking you'll find a lot of interesting possibility's. Besides, when you go to the land of strangely spoken english, their gonna take away yer gun and taser.
Had I known what I was facing, I'd have made significant changes, you've been given a second chance, you've got a guy that loves you, a skill set and background that will allow you very interesting job choices. So dammit, go play with the dolphins, or the limey, or both. Back off the adrenalin, expand your employment options, make a list of the things you've always wanted to do -- start doing them, and smell them roses until you develop an allergy.
OK so off my soap box, I'll just sit back and watch Ken, and Bothwell grovel.:-4

So dammit, go play with the dolphins, or the limey, or both. Back off the adrenalin, expand your employment options, make a list of the things you've always wanted to do -- start doing them, and smell them roses until you develop an allergy.
OK so off my soap box, I'll just sit back and watch Ken, and Bothwell grovel.:-4Agreed. Lady Cop should stop being a Cop. There is a whole new world waiting for you over here.

Good to hear. Just don't start thinking that there are these Brits that need a good old fashioned butt kickin'! Do you know how tired your legs will get? It is inconceivable that you can do it on your own. Knowing you, you'd try to prove me wrong.

What a cool thread! I, like my wonderful friend Der Wulf, thought it was about something else, and avoided it...any title that has "confused" in it merely expresses my current state of mind, which I'm trying to escape! LOL
I was shocked to hear what you've been going through, LC. Huge hugs to you...how scary!! BUt then I watched you and Bothwell playing together, and for some reason old songs are floating through my head now....
Never never never let me goooooo....What is that? Sam Cooke? Thrill Me, I think. :-4 Totally awesome!
I agree...jump the pond. I agree with Jives as well - teach. I know the old saying of Those who can do, and those who can't teach. But I'd add that those who can do it very well teach others to do it very well. What would you think of training young'uns to be police officers? You're very passionate about what you do, experienced, and you are the living model of what we want all police officers to be.

Who would be a better teacher than you?
I'm glad to see you're taking this seriously. Transition sucks, really - let's face it. LOL. But you've got wonderful things ahead of you. Muah!

AK....you are really sweet!

... i surely do have much to think about! as to teaching, i wouldn't be qualified in England. i did teach criminal law here at adult Ed. but i have to learn all the British Law and Legal system, from whence our common law derives. . ...and Kensloft, i know Bobbies aren't armed, but some UK LEOs are. and even then, i would need to be a citizen. perhaps something on the periphery of LE. so much to consider. at least i have some time to explore ideas, especially the wonderful ideas from everyone here. :-4 .............and AK, the music in your mind is all coming from Rod Stewart's American Songbook CD! xoxoxox
