My randomiser has just presented me with a Rap / Hip Hop track from the late 60s. What's odd about that is that I listened to it and enjoyed it.

Even stranger, where modern Rap often uses ******* every other word, it used nigg*r 'most every word.

Try

It says a lot.

Nice catch, Bryn.

It reminds me of Newark, N.J. during the riots in the sixties. When Black men and women fought for their rights. And some killed each other.

And Marvin Gay was shot by his father not long after.

I've been trying to define Wu Tang Clan to a friend.

There is no such artist or band, as it were. They are poets who earn their right to be heard.

Art as life. Life as art.

Thanks again for the find. Now I'm off to find some more.

I assumed when I saw the OP that it was Gil Scott Heron, one of the greats.

I Agree with you.

Old rap was much more about something important and something that mattered and therefore a lot more enjoyable.

Unlike the cars, money , drugs and the usual **** rappers rap about now.
