257 miles: about 4 hours 22 mins on the roads. If you do drive you have to stop just short of Middlesborough. You might see Newcastle in the distance. Any further and you start swimming.

http://www.transportdirect.info knows all the train times and the like. It says you can't get there without leaving the previous afternoon unless you drive.

Northallerton is situated in the County of North Yorkshire in the North of England, close to the City of York and the towns of Darlington and Middlesbrough.

As well as being a bustling market town, Northallerton is also the home of North Yorkshire County Council making it the administrative centre of North Yorkshire.
