I was doing a little reminicing this weekend and realized the power of our base senses is quite amazing especially our sense of smell.

I wanted toss this out at all of you,

do you have any particular smells that conjur up great memories?

Scent that conjures up horrible memories.

For me Lilacs take me back to my child hood and my granny she had a beautiful garden and huge yard and many summer days were spent playing in that old yard. She grew the most awesome lilac bush that produced the deepest purple flowers and to date I have yet to find one that dark.

The other scent not a nice scent, but the smell of a home that has been smoked in. Sorry folks that takes me to Vancouver Island to my other set of grandparents and the lovely home they had and childhood summers there and their 20 acre lot and care free times.

Gosh I am a sap today.

Lilacs are a great "nostalgia" smell for me too. We had a big bush in the backyard at one of the houses I lived in as a kid.

Another great smell is mown hay. From summers at The Farm. Maple syrup (the real stuff, not Log Cabin) that my grandpa used to make for Sunday morning pancakes.

Chanel #5 will always make me think my granny is in the room.

And the sweet grain we fed the horses that the neighbors grazed on our property takes me back, too. Yep. Feelin' pretty sappy now!

Jasmine! I don't know exactly when or where I was when I discovered these little flowers.

The affect is almost like Catnip for me. :p A flood of contentment and great memories.

I always had a good nose.

For me its the smell of the OCEAN.. Spent most of my childhood at the beach, I can sit and watch wave for hours, smell the surf, feel the sun... :-6

ahhhhhhhhhhhh...the smell of gunpowder and pepper-spray in the morning....*sigh*.........actually Tombstone i love night-blooming jasmine too, used to bring some in the house every night, and it perfumed the whole place. but as to a lifelong evocative favorite, burning Fall leaves and woodsmoke.

Hey Lady Cop, Carla and Tombstone. What about our garden variety?:)

ROFL! LC, you crack me up.

Well, let's see. The smell of burning cedar mixed with keg beer and marijuana brings me back to the high school parties we had in the hills. (Notice how I don't admit I was actually smoking the marijuana, I'm running the George Bush playbook, not the Bill Clinton one.)

And the smell of jet fuel at any airport will take me right back to the flightline at Vance AFB. For some reason I always seem to remember my first jet solo. I was scared witless and that seems to turn your memory banks on full blast, know what I mean? :wah:

"Charlie" perfume reminds me of my mother when I was young; it's the only scent she would wear back then. Honeysuckle~brings back springtime memories of my childhood spent running and playing from daylight to nightfall. We used to suck the juice out of the honeysuckle flowers. Does anyone else remember doing that?

Bad smell~the loamy smell of fresh turned soil always makes me think of funerals and graveyards. Ick!

Lilacs. Frangipani scent. Reminded me of marijuana. Almost got my butt kicked by a gang of cops that were in the neighbouhood lookin' to do some hippie type in because one of their cars had been trashed by another irate hippie type.

"Hey!" he said grabbing me by the arm, "Looks like we got one here! He even smells like one! What's that smell?"

"Frangipani," I reply, "it just smells like it.(eyes noticing the surrounding of the boys out to teach a lesson around me) It comes in my shampoo. You don't want to mess with me because I own a business on Queen St and they won't be happy with what I tell them in court"

Hand lets go of my arm and I walk away quickly.

Loud "Whew", when I get out of their sight.

Bad smell: Cat Urine. Dirty cat boxes. Puts me in a "foul" mood.

fresh cut grass takes me back to child hood and hanging out outside with my dad.
