Hi Pheasy:-4
I have vista on my new laptop and wanted to download skype...couldn't do it on my desktop because it's so slow. Is it worth the effort. Being new to a laptop I'm afraid of downloading any programs right now....even the keyboard is too small for me. But, I love my wireless mouse.

I am not sure if you have the newest version of skype it may work, I'm not sure. Our older version will run, it just won't accept the handset.

My dad's new laptop is installed with Vista and he doesn't like it either. In fact most people I know that have it find it more troublesome that anything else. Does anyone actually like it I wonder? :-2

I don't want to say I told you so. VISTA sucks with permission levels for any downloads.
If your not an administrator on your machine you have to become one so you will have the rights to setup programs and download. Vista has very deep levels of security for users all are totally un-necessary in my opinion and cause a world of headaches.
My suggestion go on to Dell Support Chat and have them figure it out with you. I say CHAT because if you get on the phone with them you won't understand a work they are saying. CHAT is easier and faster actually.
My guess is the driver for your phone is not supported by VISTA you may have to get the VISTA supported drive and download it inorder for it to work. Next suggestion try the online phone with a microphone.
