Hi Ihave starting to grow sweetcorn,and i want to know is it ok to grow coz i have never grown it before and would love some advise and tips on growing sweetcorn ty:)

Sweet corn is GREAT to grow. And it's pretty easy. Don't start too

early because the ground needs to be warm. The seed packages will

tell you how far apart (Most I've done are 3 feet between the rows)

to plant and how deep to put the seed. You should probably try a

hybrid type to start... the packages should also tell you if they are

"bug" resistant or whatever. Keep in mind you need to plant at least

3 rows. You can "succession" plant for longer corn yields. (Plant

3 rows, wait two weeks, plant another 3, etc.) Corn does take quite

a bit of water.



Over here, we tease and say it should be "knee-high by the 4th of July"!

I've seen different times to maturity, I think it's usually between 90

and 120 days.

Welcome to the garden, and good luck with sweet corn...I only grew it in my back yard once and actually wasn't ME who did it...so I am of NO help...Valerie gave great advice!:-6:-6

As for sweetcorn, it's delicious and nutrious and how can you ask for anything else better, if you ask me!! :-6



Anyway good luck with your sweetcorn, I hope it turns out well!!

By the way, Millit, I forgot to mention anything about fertilizer. If you

want, when you prepare the soil, you can work in several bags of

manure... (steer, chicken, whatever) and if not that, and you want

to put something on later, I always use fish emulsion.



Do you know how to test for mature ears when you get that far?

The "silks" should be brown and the ear should feel "full"... but don't

worry if you mess up the first couple of times... happens to the

best of us!

Thanks for that infor, i know a very kind farmer who can help me out with the manure,where is the best place to plant sweetcorn in my plot in the garden or in my cold frame with my lettuce.

Best to plant it right in the garden when it's warm enough. I only

transplanted once, and while I still eventually got corn, it didn't

seem to do as well.



Plant where you get absolutely the MOST hours of sun, too!!
