Very true.

I know this is a delicate subject - so sorry if I offending by posting it.

I know of 2 men living around here who fought in the Vietnam war - I have to say that they have been left with some serious mental issues. Very sad .... they are so bad - I don't think I want to hear their stories.

No one won.

Everyone lost.

I agree with Nomad.

No one won this war, an undeclared war termed a military action.

How many died? Too many. Many of my classmates and friends, young men who I flirted with as a teenage girl, sent off much too young into eternity.

No need to apologise and I fail to see why anyone would be offended by your question. There are some people that would probably be offended by asking "What did you have for dinner", a real thought provoking question.:-3

No one won the Vietnam War-----------all participants lost.

That perhaps is an understandable American self-delusion but it's entirely untrue. The rest of the planet won in that it deterred the US for the next twenty years from embarking on major invasions outside their own back yard. One can only hope that the bogged down no-win inertia in Iraq and Afghanistan will eventually succeed in delivering the same moral message - Yankee go home.

Oh - ask anyone in Vietnam who won, they'll tell you different too.

Pheasy: Well, if you are nervous about posting the thread, I have been havering for a while about replying.

But in the end it seems to me that the USA does itself no service by refusing to admit they lost that war (ie did not achieve their objectives)and the North Vietnamese won (ie achieved their objectives). If they do not, they cannot learn the lessons of it. Which makes all the deaths even more futile.

I'm sure that's a great comfort to the survivors of the hundreds of thousands that were killed as a result of that conflict not to mention the utter waste of resources.

My response is the same fro Iraq and Afganistan (No Winners) , and we shouldn't be there, period.

Yes. It is understood that President Kennedy's personal interest for re-election was his primary implication to stay in Vietnam. After his re-election in 1964, he was planing on leaving Indochina and leaving it to its own faith. Furthermore President Johnson just wanted to finish what his predecessor had started, a mission that cost him great remorse. South Vietnamese President Diem was fighting for a free South Vietnam. All he wanted is to be independent without having any strings attached. His problem was that he was planning a different democratic reform as the Americans had in mind, which succeeded in his assassination. Diem, for example was planing democratic reform on a different scale and calender than his American (and Vietnamese) critics. It is clear that Vietnam was Americas only foothold in Southeast Asia and that it was therefore necessary to the U.S. that its government would execute its exact orders or face damnation.
