I live in a not-that-small-anymore rivertown and our police and media are pretty much bedfellows with each other. A murder happened on the corner from me some years back and it was in the paper once only as a suicide. Everyone who knew the man and the circumstances of how he was when found knew it wasn't a suicide but it got swept under the rug because there was suspicion the person(s) who did it were on the fire department. Our friend was disliked because of his position in the department and they wanted him out.

Another friend of mine was murdered in a drug deal gone wrong and that never made the news because they figured as a drug addict, who would care.

Our head city council member is an alcoholic and has been pulled many times over for driving drunk but it's never in the paper that someone representing our city routinely takes people's lives into her drunken hands.

Where I live, if you have enough money or enough clout with the proper people, you can do your dirty deeds without getting coverage.

That is one way to look at it. Although sometimes they withhold info from the public because it might ruin their case; might keep them from nabbing the criminal.
