I know I have thrown a lot of fores and against out here on the boards, and the feed back I have got from you all was a great help to me. There are MANY great teachers out there, MANY great schools, and MANY wonderful children. But I have to look at the way (generally) things are going in schools. I also have to look at my children's situation.

My son, as most of you already know, is ADHD (okay I hear some saying 'yeah right!'), well he is severally so! The schools cannot deal with him without meds. - I don't want him on meds. - I can deal with him off some of his meds. Also, if they gave him recess, if they stopped trying to make him do 2.5 hour lessons without a break, he would be okay ... but I have fought long and hard on this, sadly I have failed. Also, the schools have acknowledged that he his is extremely intelligent however have still put into the 'failing' section. He is with kids that do drugs and cut themselves ... I will not have him with those kids.

Also, my daughter, as most of you already know, has a life threatening peanut allergy. She did not start school when she should because the school would not 'readily' action the safety changes that were required. I had to fight the system to get changes done under 'section 504' , like allowing her to carry her life saving medication, like requesting that ALL teachers had first aid training. Well we managed to get that sorted, only to have a 2nd grader rub peanuts in her face to 'see what would happen'! Well hopefully the shock of what did happen will prevent that 'see what will happen' desire in the future!

So with gangs of kids beating up their peers, with gangs of kids beating up their teachers, with teachers dealing in drugs, with kids doing drugs .... my list goes on forever. I shall homeschooling my kids next year ... wish me luck

I applaud you Mom!! I would homeschool my kids in a minute if I were able to. I think you and the kids will adjust fine and there are so many homeschooling groups and activities now-adays, sure there are numerous websites etc.

I know they used to have homeschooling fairs in my town and we would get our curriculumn there, because you were able to look at it and representatives were on hand to explain the benefits of their products and you could decide which was best for your children.

I remember when I pulled my oldest out of public school and they told me that they felt like they failed, I didn't say anything...just looked at them.....I was about 10 years younger then, now I would have told them, darn skippy you failed my kid!!

I am fortunate that the kids are having good experiences so far, but the gangs and shootings do scare the crap out of me. I have no choice though, I'm happy for you that you do Pheasy....I'd wish you good luck, but you don't need it, you'll be fine. You are determined to take care of your children to your best ability, therefore you will be just fine and dandy!!:-4:-6

I home schooled my ADHD son after the school totally failed him. In just 6 months he had learned more than he had managed in two years at school. But most importantly he was happy.

Then when he was 8 we moved to Holland. They don't allow home schooling but they had special schools called LOM school very small classes about 10 children 20 minute lessons so that they didn't loose interest with breaks of 10 minutes after every 2 lessons.

I'm happy to say that he went onto catering collage and passed his exams but his food allergies and a neurological problem ( causes tremors) meant that after two years he couldn't carry on in his career.

So he tried something else and is now a help desk manager at a PC company on their international help desk.

Not bad for a kid who I was told would be lucky if he even got through junior school.

I loved homeschool!!! like for one of my history lessons we went to the Alamo... I enjoyed it more than public!:)

This is great news Pheasy, I'm sure you will find it really rewarding being able to see and help kids grow up.

Thanks everyone. I have found a school that offers a lot of assistance if needed. I am more confident about the 2nd grade level, not so confident about my 8th grade abilities .... thank goodness for the books provided and internet access... :)

You've got another six years to reach that standard - as long as you keep one step ahead you'll be fine.

Best of luck with that. To be honest I'm not sure how that works because it's not done here. Do you teach the children yourself and or do you have to hire a teacher or how does that work?

Do use the resources available on home schooling. I admire someone who can go from "mommy" mode to "teacher" mode successfully.

I'll be nosey and answer the question for you Jenny....Homeschooling is generally when the parents teach the children. There are groups in my area where homeschooling moms have formed a private school and teach a certain amount of kids (small groups) so that one parent isn't doing it all.

For the most part, Mom and Dad (in my case it was just me) does the teaching....It works well for many people, I know many families that have success stories from homeschooling their kids....and they are socially active and not weirdos like a lot of people think they will be if kids aren't in a school setting.
