Well thats what i hear people say time and time again.

So, who here gives to charity . I think every one should,even if its just a few pence a week . Think of the difference we could all make if we all did it . :-6

What do you think about giving money to people begging ( that can be a tricky one ). One thing thats sure to melt my heart is seeing someone with a dog begging, i've lost count of the number of times i've bought them Dog food ......like i've said before i think i like animals much better than people;)

My definition of charity begins at home is donating to the charities within your country which I do but I dont donate to overseas charities because I believe in helping our own first. Thats my opinion anyhow

I don't give to begging people because where I live anyway, it's a career for so many. Just like Jimbo said. And the story is always the same, especially in summer:"my van's out of gas and I have my wife and kids in the car, can you help us with some money?" And then we see the same guy doing it the next week in a different parking lot.

I give to animal charities when I can and i have helped many get operations, neutering, food, medicine. I am with Pants on that one, I choose mostly to help the animals.

I also buy stuff from kids if I have loose cash on me which is a damn rarity these days and sometimes I will give to medical charities IF they do not test on animals in their proceedings. This leaves out the majority of them but there are a few with integrity. And if my friends need money and I have it, I've been known to give them what I can.

Giving to Charity I feel is a very private thing....but yes I do but dont want to disclose what ones as feel some may think.....oh so and so is more important than that.I will however say that one day everything I own will be divided between a few charitys .....only worry is it actually does go to the charitys.

I cant watch those type of things Jim.Oh I know what goes on alright as I know what goes on with so many farm animals and yes gotta say it breaks my bloody heart but the hard truth is it will always go on and thank God for those out there who do there best to help some of those creatures where they can.

Charity begins at home. Look to your neighbors. Is there a shut in elder who need a fence mended or garden tended? Do it. Is the local church having a car wash? Get your car washed, then grab a sponge and get to work.



Anybody able-bodied enough to beg is able-bodied enough to work. Take the guy to that old lady's house to help you fix her fence, then give him supper or a few quid (bob? pesos?) for his effort.



My next door neighbor is hospitalized. When I mow my lawn it only takes a few extra minutes to cut her front yard as well.

Wish you lived near me then. I have 2 ruptured discs in my back and I have to mow the lawns and the bloke next door watches me with a beer in his hand:-5

Exactly. Volunteering time is as important as volunteering money. Communities need to start pulling together more and neighbors need to help neighbors.

I'll very rarely give to beggars, not only because I've seen a lot of scams but also because most of it would go to drink or drugs. What I do is give to Crisis / Shelter so there's somewhere they can go to for help.

For the same reason, my wife was a voluntary helper at the local shelter until we moved.

Can it be any worse than what the vegans do? Heck they cut the heads off of lettuce, cabbage, etc etc. then eat them raw sometimes. Just because we can't hear them scream, doesn't mean they don't.

I noticed job adverts for a charity here in the UK today. Two posts offering £70,000 and £60,000 per annum plus benefits. I am shocked that 'charities' can pay that amount of money in salaries!

That is just unbelievable and also so sad for the people who give to those charities thinking there hard earned cash was being spent wisely.

I have done lots of charity work for lots of different charities, also having 2 kids in primary school means I practically give every week to different causes.

I work for cervical/breast screening and now also bowel screening and we have fundraisers running non stop.

Charity definately begins at home, do you realise how much a smile or a knock to see how your doing cheers up a lonely pensioner. Asking if you can pick up some groceries for them, clean their windows etc....List is endless, costs you nothing but the reward is priceless.

Now back to the subject, Yes, charity begins at home. Children know what they see. If their parents help others, they will most likely do the same. I've donated items to Goodwill, to the Headstart program,blood to the Red Cross and financial contributions to other organizations when I could. Not bragging......just glad to do it.

Some would read "charity begins at home" as being a selfish statement, but when you think about it, it's common sense. I am not useful to others until my own "house is in order" so to speak.......I give to AmVets monthly (American Veterans) which is much like Salavation Army.....I can always find clothes that don't fit me
