jimbo;850148 wrote: speaking for myself only here i have noticed that i have much more of an open mind , i used to think my opinions were right basically because i thought they were ,no logic no facts although i dont get into the logic stuff much i really do read the stuff you guys churn out and based on the facts i make my opinion
i have changed my idea's on quite a few issue's just reading the to and throwing of the fg brainiac's
i like it when spot and hoff aka gallybally have a difference ,no nastiness no name calling just different sides of a debate just purely on facts
why cant we all do that ? why do we have to always be right ? none of us can really know everything so whats the big deal
i have never ever had a problem saying sorry when i'm wrong (probably coz i'm in the wrong so much :p) and if someone is not big enough to say sorry when its so obvious they know they are wrong i cant think of any way they could humiliate themselves more
but if you are one of those people that wont admit you are wrong here are a few tips to help you out
Its funny, I was just thinking the other day, I've been on this place for a good few years now, and it certainly is a little world of its own that does have a bit of an effect on your thinking, because you will tend to encounter people with very different ideas, some informed and intelligent, some very well articulated, some based on strong emotions, some just kinda mischief making, and some of the more typical things that everyone tends to think. I think its pretty much for certain that any interaction with others on a forum like this will engage people in thinking about their own opinions and why they tend to have them a bit more than would be case otherwise. Interesting post Jimbo me lad.

In the course of exchanging opinions on strong issues, emotions are going to come forefront for many people as most average folks are not expert at accepting and expressing criticism. Is anyone really? Admitting "wrong" is not something we oppose, rather it is something we were taught never to do.
People are going to disagree and personalities are part of the equation. Its my opinion that it is best to permit people to fight through these things and remain a neutral minded participant if one is able to. What is hurtful to this forum and life in general is when others choose to take sides. But its a reflection of our culture. We want to be apart of what we perceive to be the winning side or in a winner's corner. We seem to get self identity satisfaction out of that and a chance to let a friend know how we feel about them in crisis. I also thinks its part of that competitive thing I keep preaching.....not that I'm right, mind you.
Before becoming a father, its how I behaved, and if I don't remain cognizant of my adulthood status, I'm easily drawn back into my old self (behaviors and tendencies), just as easily as anyone else.
Lets be rid of this right/wrong-good/bad-white/black way of communicating and thinking.
Nobody is, or at least should be an authority on what is and is not valid when it comes to opinions. People speak from their education, or lack thereof, and their life experiences. If one cannot read both in expressive written form, then its best to stay away form the issue and the person.
As for moderating, I'm a believer that everything in life should be up front when possible. If a person is a moderator, it should be known in their heading IMO, otherwise they should not moderate. Most moderators here are quiet enough, but for those that aren't (and a moderator has the right to be either), I believe part of their job is to constantly remind that they are acting as such as well as a regular member via their heading.
You certainly have a way with words. Many, many words.

shrug. Haven't been here long enough. I do welcome the chance to read other opinions and refine my own ideas accordingly.
Incidentally, be aware of the limitations of logic:
1) It's only as useful as the data it is handling is correct and relevant.
2) In many areas, eg human relationships, it's just not an appropriate tool.

I've certainly added a few more rules :-
Think before opening mouth
Before you get on your high horse, re-read the post from a different angle - did the poster mean what you read
Be sure of your facts - they'll come back to haunt you if wrong
Before you hit send, re-read the post from a different angle - will the reader take it as intended
Don't post whilst drunk

Some of mine have been turned on their head whilst others have been confirmed and set in stone.
Long live the Garden and its range of ideas that make you think and justify why you think.

I have learned that there can be one group of people, of mixed nationality, religion, shape, size, age etc ..... with many different beliefs and understandings, who can get along together. As Bryn said, to re-read posts (others and my own) and don't assume anything. And to show respect and try to understand others views.
I learned that Wisey likes any shaped/sized boobies and Spot needs spanking

Ahhhhhh Jim, ya big softie cuddly one:-4
I think that we're very lucky to have found such a lovely place that Chris has created for us in the Forum Garden.
I honestly feel blessed to be a member of the FG and have such a special place in my heart for so many members here in the garden. You have all touched me in so many ways that can't be explained. Even though I probably won't meet many FG people in real life, I will still cherish you in my thoughts and always know that you're here for me if ever I needed your help or a good ear to listen to my moans and complaints and good tidings.
Even though things get a bit quiet or slow at the FG sometimes...so what...it's just good to know that we're a family and that's what families do...they live..they grow..they move on...and they usually come home to visit.
I just love all of you damn it...and that's that:-4

Some people I have noticed the odd little change, but nothing dramatic or anything. :p
