Yes, a manual one is just as good. I used one for the last four years, and my kids kindly have hired a gardener for me. They thought I got enough exercise washing dishes....:wah:

I had a manual years ago, but find they aren't good unless you have
a really good lawn. Ours is funky, and laying new sod isn't in the
budget, especially since we're facing mandatory water rationing
coming up soon.
I'm leaning towards electric, I think I can be careful of the cord,
and we only have a tiny (probably a 15 minuter, too!) lawn in
front and none at all in back...

My dad's lawn was smallish but he had a gas mower, gas trimmer, gas edger and little gas trimmer. Everything took a different gas/oil mix. I bought him electric everything. he already had an outdoor outlet so it worked out great. The cord can be a hassel and you can't use them on a wet lawn but otherwise, ok.

If the lawn's really small, I vote you get rid of the grass and plant some bushes & flowers. Low-growing ground cover between and stepping stones or gravel in the heavy traffic areas. With the right plants it's lower maintenance and you'll be the envy of the neighborhood.
I've gone electric before. It's fine if you stay on top of it, but it takes a long time if you don't mow often.
If you go gas powered, make sure it has a Briggs & Stratton engine, no matter the brand. I got mine at Wal mart fairly cheap.

I've had all three types, & there's really nothing to add to what has already been mentioned by the previous posts.
However, Acc's post is a good one, as my friend did just that. Planted low ground covering plants all over the majority of his 1/2 lot!!! What's not covered by plant cover, is covered by "white marble looking stones"!!
No weekly maintanance what so ever, just the periodic collecting of leaves!
