Do I need a Permit?

I have a small spot of rot on my roof. I thought it was termites but the exterminator assured me it wasn't & explained what I should look for for termite damage. Didn't even charge me! (guess who I'm recommending in the future :-6)
Anyway, I need to replace about a 4x4 foot area to take care of the rotten wood. Any advice on whether I need permits for something this small?

Off the top of my head yes and off the bottom of my head it will probably have to be inspected.

That's what I'm thinking.

$50 for repairs and $350 for approval.

Good advice RJ. In my town if you are making a repair to an existing structure, you do not need a permit. If I was, however, building a new structure I would need a building permit and an inspection.

Your not modifying the existing area your just replacing it I don't think a permit is required. If its a structural beam maybe. :p
