My little Chevy S-10's catalytic converter is broken. It's rattling like crazy and driving us nuts. Is that something I can get from a junk yard? How much does replacing one of those things cost?

Yes, you can go to a junk yard and look for one. Do you have a Pick a Parts type one around you? Great for those kind of things.
New ones can cost $500+. I always feel sorry for my team leader at school, they have twice sawed off his from under his truck while he was busy inside school teaching.......and he had to replace it himself, of course.

If you do it yourself it looks like a new one is about $150
Call junkyards though, they might even have one off the truck and on a shelf waiting for you.

Yeh, that's what I'm thinking, environmental laws & all. The rattle's coming from inside the can. Loud as hell, too.

Yup, crawled under his truck and sawed it off two times, while the school cop was just sitting in front of the video monitors. Never walks through the parking lot.

Just thought I'd share this:
As Platinum soars, so has the recent theft catalytic converters (which contain platinum). As of June 2008 Platinum was worth $2,032 per ounce. One car dealership in our area had 17 converters stolen off brand new vehicles parked in their lot! It takes less than 3 minutes to saw off a converter from under a vehicle.

Hello RJ :-6
There are usually about 3 grams of platinum in a catalytic converter. There are 31.1 grams in an ounce. If platinum was at $2000/ounce you can figure right at $200 worth per converter. From what I know in my area, junkyards are making quite a bit of money selling them as scrap metal. They warn people where I am to park your vehicle in your garage or if you don't have garage, to park your vehicle in a well lit area. These people can also jack up a car if they had the opportunity.
