I don't get why they took it off the menu. Nobody would be forced to order it.

To be technically precise, it's a delicacy anywhere.

None of the dogs sold in Chinese food outlets have ever been pets, where do you get that notion?

Do they randomly take dogs off the street or do they breed them for eating?

Bred for the table, just like your ordinary Texas Longhorn. Saint Bernards command a premium in the restaurants, apparently, they taste so good.

I tried to find objective information about it, but of course the filters make anything not condemning the practice hard to find.

After seeing video of a man tie a German shepard to a fence and then start to skin it from the tail up while the animal clearly went into shock.

I find all jokes about this subject misplaced to say the least

You're not saying that's the traditional way of butchering a dog, are you??

I've not seen any jokes so far. Whoever did that to a German Shepherd should have been prosecuted but it has nothing to do with Beijing's restaurant trade.

What infuriates me is people setting different standards for pets than they tolerate with animals destined for consumption.

Different cultures find the killing and eating of different animals horrible. Cows are held in high regard in India, pork is not eaten my Muslims, dogs are seen as pets in the Western culture.

I think because we keep Dogs purely as pets we cant stand the thought of another country eating them but they dont eat pets, they breed them as food, same as we breed cows, pigs, sheep etc....

Some things one culture would call a good meal we'd call for a good exterminator.

What we pay top dollar in a flower shop might be considered weeds somewhere else.

Why take Dog off their menu ?

I heard on the news China will take Dog meat off their menu so they don't insult others (US). ? Will Dog still be on the hot plate for locals - or do they have to go without?

Several here on FG feel - If your French, speak French, be who you are & proud.

okey dokey

I'll be miffed if we take bacon and sausage and black pudding off all-day breakfasts during the 2012 London Olympics just because the Israeli team's supporters might be offended. The Chinese may be being polite to visitors but it had better not set a precedent.

If anything they should be adding to menus and other entertainment to make visitors feel at home. I look forward to seeing pole dancing at a future Saudi Arabian Olympics. :D

Debatable.

They are held in terrible confines and not killed kindly.

I'll save you the more upsetting pictures. Here is some info from The Animals Voice with pictures but do not look at them if you are sensitive as they show dogs being butchered and eaten.

And how does that compare with the butchering of other breeds of animal destined for consumption like sheep or goats or cows or pigs or geese or farmed salmon or chickens? Are you suggesting those conditions, or that treatment, is out of the ordinary by comparison?

I'm not sure that what they're doing there in China is remotely as vile as what's done to veal calves or pate de foie geese and throwing in "French" there is gratuitous nationalistic flag-waving, I'm sure veal and pate de foie are still produced and eaten in the US.

Actually, they are trying to outlaw fois gras in Philadelphia restaurants because of the gross nature of killing the geese.

And they reversed the city ban in New York a few months ago because too many people were pining for a taste of luxury. It amazes me that the fate of these dogs should be interesting anyone in the West, given the complete lack of even wanting to progress against the many abuses of farm animals in our own countries. How can people turn a blind eye locally and then cry about these food items on another continent?

Looks like standard butchering to me. If you can't stand to look at those pics then I suggest not taking up hunting. Oh, and that's not much different than slaughtering animals on the farm, either.

I think you're missing her point.

As for the fish, we've decimated their numbers over the last few decades through overfishing and habitat destruction.
