Maine Woman Finds 8-Foot Python in Washing Machine



GORHAM, Maine — A woman got the shock of her life when she found an 8-foot snake mixed in with clothes in her washing machine. The snake, identified as a reticulated python, somehow got into the water pipes of Mara Ranger's 1800s-era farmhouse and slithered into the machine.

After Ranger took her blue jeans out of the machine Wednesday, she reached back into the load and felt something move.

"I jumped back and all of sudden its head starts coming out of the washing machine and it looked huge," Ranger told WMTW-TV.

Ranger quickly closed the lid and called police and an animal control officer, but they didn't want anything to do with the serpent.

When Richard Burton, who operates Maine Animal Damage Control in Lewiston, arrived at Ranger's house, he could barely believe his eyes.

Burton reached into the machine wearing a pair of welding gloves, expecting to come out with a 4-foot snake. But when he pulled the animal out, it kept coming and coming — all 8 feet of it.

Once out of the machine, the angry snake wrapped itself around Burton's hand, cutting off the blood flow. Burton then wrestled the scaly reptile into a plastic bag, tied it shut and brought it to Lewiston.

That's where Jen Lewis, a wildlife rehabilitator who works at the Kennel Shop, identified it as a python. The snakes kill prey with their teeth but are not poisonous, she said.

Lewis and Lewiston's animal control officer planned to find the snake a home at a wildlife refuge.

But how the snake ended up in the washing machine remains a mystery. Burton guessed it was somebody's pet and that the owner ended up tossing it out into the wild when it got too big. It then made its way through the water pipes and into the washing machine, probably after the load was done, he said.

In the meantime, Ranger said she's a little paranoid.

"Now that it's gone, I'm going to be checking crevasses and corners," Ranger said. "I'm going to be looking in the tub first — before and after, maybe even during, the rinse cycle."

My daughter is the manager of a reptile shop. Last week animal rescue turned up and asked if she could take a snake.

It had been found by someone when they went to use the loo! The snake was swimming around in the toilet bowl. I like snakes but even I can understand that might lead to some traumatic constipation!!!

On a serious note this was a 3 foot african house snake ( non venomous) that the owner had proberbly got tired of and had flushed it down the toilet. Reptile or not thats still animal cruelty

OMG!! i would have a trauma for life if i found a snake in the toilet!!:(

but yeah i agree, it's terrible the way people have something as a pet and then just throw it away like that!

i have a different view of snakes i guess, out here on the farm they are enemies they eat up your eggs if you have chickens and when your in the field you have to constantly worry about stepping on one and getting bitten!

I like to get the smaller ones from the back yard...then I chase everyone with it because everyone else in the house is terrified of them(yep, even hubby). Even put one in the shower when one of my girls was in there. :wah::wah::wah:

oh the whole concept of a snake just creeps me out, slithering around grabbing some poor little critter and eating it like they do!

plus where i live i see them everywhere, i've almost stepped on several, had one almost fall on my head once and had one to almost bite me on one occasion, and one did bite my dog!:(

I don't think we have any posinous snakes around here except the ones people keep as pets. So I can understand your being affraid of them...I probably would too if I was where you are.

yeah we have a couple of posinous types and we have seen the occasional rattlesnake as well, but they are usually in the mountains!

but my poor dog saved me from getting bitten! we were in the strawberry patch in the garden and it was really thick that year lots of plants, and i had a beautiful German Shepard named buddy! he was very protective and went with me everywhere!

he was milling around in the patch with us and all of a sudden he notices something and gets over inbetween me and whatever it is.

when he sticks his nose back down into the plants all of a sudden he jumps up and starts rolling around and rubbing his head in the dirt, and you could see the plants moving as the snake was slithering away!

the poor guy had two fang marks right on top of his nose! :-1

we rushed him to the vet and they fixed him up and he was alright, he just had a swelled up nose for a while! :rolleyes:

I'm glad your Buddy came out ok. That sounds like a frightening thing to go thru...I couldn't handle that kind of thing with my babies.

Great idea! I'm going to put a rubber snake in my washer then start screaming :wah: Then tell hubby I have so much trauma from it, I can't possibly wash clothes again :wah:

My family and I drove through the sunflower fields and small towns of Spain on our way to Gibraltar Then we took a hydrofoil across to Tangiers. Some of our members were afraid to go to Tangiers. We had a ball and they missed an opportunity of a lifetime.

We took a coach tour of Tangiers, shopped in the Casbah, and then ate at the Hammadi Restaurant while watching belly dancers.....The rest of my family missed a trip of a lifetime....we had a spectacular guide who showed us all the sites...

okay, i am completely creeped out again!

i look out my front door and right up aganist the cement border that i have around my flowers, there was an ugly black and white spotted snake! now i was always taught that you keep your eye on the snake so as not to lose it, and get somebody else to go find something to kill it with. i had my phone with me so i called mom. all i have to do is say snake! and she knows what to do. while i'm waiting for mom, i'm watching this snake, it keeps rolling all around, i can't figure out what it's doing!

so here comes mom with her hoe! now before you start laughing, (i know the term hoe can mean something completely different) :sneaky: this hoe is a gardening tool with a long handle and a sharp edge, we use it for chopping weeds in the field. and it's perfect for killing snakes!

anyway mom takes a whack at the snake and one runs in one direction, and one runs in the other direction!

there were 2 of them! it then dawns on me what all the rolling around was about! they were, (how can i put this delicately), they were being romantic!

I kill rattlesnakes I find in my yard , since they are the only poisonous snakes we have around here they are the only ones I kill. Take a shovel whack 'em on the head while they out cold, chop off the head. They be dead before they even know they are in a fight.

yeah! it totally gave me the willies too! we have several types of posionous snakes here, water moccasons, copperheads and cottonmouths, and the occasional rattlesnake!

i'll do you one better! my mom looks under the covers of her bed every night before she'll get in it!

thats why the hoe is so good, its got a long handle so you don't have to get to close! whack'em in the middle of their back so they can't crawl and then chop there heads off!:D

i don't like doing that though, i usually if i'm gonna kill one, i get my gun and shoot it!

Was this the culprit? It's hard to find a black & white spotted snake, but this is on the list of Virginia snakes.

This harmless snake is one of the world's most interesting species and best animal actors.



When confronted, its first defense is an aggressive display in which it spreads its neck horizontally, inflates its body, hisses loudly, and strikes. The very impressive display has earned it the misname of "Spread Adder" and other frightening names. This is all an act. The strike is made with a closed mouth, and it is very, very rare for a Hognose to actually bite a person, even when handled.



If aggression fails to send the threat on its way, the Hognose will pretended to die. It will writhe, open the mouth, let the tongue dangle, salivate and get dirt in the mouth, roll onto its back and become motionless. If picked up the snake will be totally limp and feel like a dead snake. If the threat moves out of the snake's view, it will begin to peak around in a few minutes, and, if the coast is clear, right itself and crawl away. The only flaw in its death act is that if rolled it onto its stomach it will immediately roll onto its back.



The Hognose principally eat toads. It hunts them in the toads' burrows during the day, using its upturned nose to root them out. As a defense to being eaten, toads will blow themselves up like a balloon. The Hognose has an answer to this defense. The snake has some rear teeth with are much longer than the others, like fangs. These teeth will puncture the toad's skin and deflate it.



Adult Eastern Hognoses are usually about 30 inches in length. These snakes have patterns of varying colors, including blacks, grays, browns, yellows, and oranges. There is also a black phase. In black phased specimens, the pattern can be seen in grays in the juveniles, but soon turns to plain black.



These snakes lay eggs.

WHEN i see a snake in the yard. the first thing my hubby says. What shape head did it have?? Well i don't know about you, but i don't take the time to take that good of a look!!:wah:

OMG...just when my snake nightmares ended :wah: I would freak out and you're lucky your mom isn't afraid like I am.

That looks like a harmless little snake. But I remember in the west, you always watched for rattlers, those were not so harmless.

When my mom was a kid in AR. she told me of a snake that would CHASE YOU!! OMG!! I think she called it a blue Racer. Not sure of this snakes name:(

There are sidewinders, I have never heard of a blue chaser-well, as a snake......

You always remembered it!

I used to catch garter snakes as a kid, and horned toads. They are pretty harmless critters.

Blue Chaser? Sounds like a drink at the Pubnutter's Inn. Thanks for the idea though:wah:

i still will touch lizzards or frogs/toads. But you can keep your snakes!!:wah:

No snakes for the classroom, I will take my hermit crab that came home with us from the beach.

Blue chasers are real; I googled them to be sure but I remember them. They move really fast and "run" with their head held high. Scarey looking.

Still, I wouldn't want to be around that snake.

I've always been told that the black snakes we have around here will chase you at a certain time of the year! around May i think, why i don't know!

it could just be one of those tales that the old timers tell though!
