When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to be a subject of interest.

- William Hazlitt

Just came across the above quote this morning and it put me in mind of some of the more controversial threads that can arise in the garden.

Do those threads that evoke controversy in us tell us more about ourselves than others?

What do you think?

I think our inner feelings on the topic are revealed, and sometimes our inability to communicate properly-hence the arguing back and forth on certain topics.

Is that an inability to communicate properly though, the arguing? Surely thats an inability to accept that everyone has differing opinions and not feel the need to change that persons opinion to match your own.

Interesting point, Betty. This is slightly off the point, but remember how many "viewers" those tar pit threads used to get? It was as if they were of interest to almost everyone, me very much included :o

I suppose if a topic held no interest at all for someone, then that person wouldn't bother to open it at all, and certainly would need to make no comment to themselves or to anyone.

I haven't thought about this much yet, as I have to go out. Will be responding again later.

Look, I came into this thread expecting at very least to see blood, spilled guts, tea swilling moderators and trolls brawling, fundamentalist American gun toting righteous folk preaching against the limpwristed liberal abortion loving lesbian tree hugging people who can't spell, or banned members rising up as one to tear limb from limb those evil conspirators who have not recently been abducted by scripture quoting aliens or snail eating French cardie stealers... and instead I find .... a literary quotation. Heck, I'm going to bed!!!
