In the late twelfth century 'Peter, son of Fulbert' had a grant of land in Upper Pollock in Renfrewshire and took his name from it. The placename itself means 'little pool'. The name remained popular in Renfrewshire and spread throughout the lowlands of Scotland.
The name first came to Northern Ireland in the mid-seventeenth century. One family in County Down, was descended from John Pollock, a lieutenant,a foot soldier serving in Ireland.
