Nomad's Rating:

300 was touted to me as one of the greatest epic films ever made.

What ?

I had to see for myself.

Thats 2 hrs Ill never get back !

Loved the story, hated the cinematography.

It bordered on cheesy...oh what the hell, it was cheesy.

The Spartans were a finely tuned fighting machine and they gave a valiant effort defending themselves from Persia but the references and symbolism were cartoonish.

The Spartans were portrayed as heroic while the Persians were portrayed as beast like carnivores with ridiculous Greek like mythological giant Gods with razor sharp teeth.

This could have been a really good film but it fell far short.

And this was an American film, was it? Distributed worldwide during a time of US / Iranian tensions?

Let me guess - the Spartans were put across as upholders of democracy, huh?

And, presumably, it wasn't the Spartans' fault that these alien hordes of unwashed Satanists were out to destroy their All-Spartan Virtues and rape their children? And did the Spartan Elders make noble speeches about Freeedum and then send their fighters off to defend the Homeland with superior weaponry against massive armies?

The Spartans were offered life for a mere parcel of earth and water.

The elders werent willing to send their army into battle with the Persians because it would have been suicide but the elite army of 300 went in spite of warnings that they were commanded not too.

The 300 staved off thousands for 3 days and 3 nights because the Persian army was being funneled through a narrow impasse so their numbers were only a few at a time.

Eventually a traitor showed them a bypass and they were flanked from behind.

They died making heroic speeches while standing with oh....about 80 or 90 arrows protruding from their skulls feet elbows knees toes and ears.

Isn't it strange how symbolic acts take on different levels of importance at different times? The Spartans in this Hollywood fiction destroy the entire Hellenic world just by refusing to send a parcel of earth and water, while back in reality at the same moment George Bush is quite happy to abase himself with a ritual humiliating apology to the Chinese in exchange for getting his spy plane back. The only issue at the time was how many dollars does a ritual humiliating apology cost and it came out cheap enough. If it's propaganda it can be defiant, if it's real-world it gets priced first.

It was based more on the comic book version, the History Channel's version is quite good. I never would watch that flick to the end-I at least saved an hour of my life for something better. :)

There have been even less realistic portrayals of the battle, mind.

It is apparently based on a comic book series which is in turn based on the 300 spartans and the battle of thermopylae. It, however, saved embarrassment by skating over the homnosexual aspects of spartan culture so it probably went down well in the bible belt-all guts and glory with no kissing. Personally anything that gets people interested in history is good thing.

Methinks you read too much in to it. Bet you half the audience don't where Persia used to be anyway. It's a safe bet GW doesn't

Just to rub it in we are about to engage in the olympics where amongst other things there will be MARATHON race. Maybe you should start a movement to get them renamed the friendship games and rename the marathon the snickers race and whatever you do don't mention the opium wars or hong kong while in china.

It was ok for a movie to entertain me. I did get up and leave the room alot though, blood and guts violence is just not my thing. And the little spartan guy who was a traitor really had me gagging. :o
