There appears to be an inordinate amount of gold medals going to China.

I expect that when a country has a seven year build-up from being awarded the games to hosting them their athletes have a fixed goal to train for and they're slightly more determined to excel. I'm delighted with the way they're responded. Every one of their medals is the result of years of focused dedicated self-application.

The countries that host the games seem to do really well medal wise. Good on them I say :D

What's this sour grapes cos your athletes are rubbish? Maybe you need to change the drug dosage or something-give them whatever Michael Phelps takes.

Yeh I understand what you mean. They're winning so many they have to measure them by the pound to save time counting. Obviously they're taking all the money saved by slave labor to buy off judges. It's a good thing that Phelps guy is kind of slanty-eyed. :yh_think

Grapes are sour because grapes are rubbish! Don't you Scots know anything? :D Besides, we don't have cost controls on our drugs so we can't afford the good stuff.

An inordinate integer of gold medals ?

Poppycock !

Oh dear. The number you're searching for, just at the moment, is 47. Since we're not innumerate and it's countable the number of gold medals going to China is not inordinate. If (and I don't demand that it's the case) each gold medal weighs 120 grams then the amount of gold medals they've won is 5.64 kilograms. If you express that in atoms you're back to a number again instead of an amount. Atoms are countable even if your total's an approximation, weights aren't.

The word you were fishing for in your first post was "lot".

Is everyone in agreement with the scoring system which generates that Gold or Silver?

I didn't care for the new scoring system for Gymnastics .

After giving it more thought I suppose the new system was more accurate.

instead of a score of 8 you get a 15.7..?

Some of the scores were a surprise..

I noticed that on some men events didn't have the same new scoring system - can't think of which at the moment. ??

Nomad are you saying your not in agreement with the results?

I'm not so much in agreement with the results on all events

I certainly enjoyed the Olympics

Alway home field advantage especially in the events that are judged. Yes they are good but some of the diving score for the China divers were over the top. But in the end its all good.

I can tell you for a fact that all the Womens Soccer team players had to have drug tests the day of the game, just prior to the game and immediately after even if they did play in the game.

With a population of 1,321,851,888 they have pretty good chance of developing good athletes.

The US has more overall but GOLD MEDALS are used for rankings.

The human rights stuff will be overcome in China in time......the so called 'civilised' western world wasn't too hot on human rights if you look back in history....not that many years ago if you delve deep enough.

A perceptive point, Bez. I grew up in a world where human rights in the Western World were effectively non-existent. I suspect that when people look back on us now from a fifty year perspective they'll see major flaws in what we consider good going. I reckon I can see quite a few just from here.

Some results yes.

In the case of slanty eyed Phelps there can be no question. Its win/lose and unless theres a violation its not judged.

Some of the events that are judged like diving and womens gymnastics, the scores did seem over the top.

I wasnt looking for judging errors but I recognized them when I saw them.

Ah, is he in fast food commercials? You can tell I don't pay attention. He is setting up a new aquatic center and ice skating center for Olympic training, great for the kids here.

Nothing nicer here Nomad, then swimming in the middle of winter in an indoor pool. I learned that last winter, 20 degrees or lower outside, nice 78+ in the pool. I am going to do it again this year.

Lunch: Half-kilogram (one pound) of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread; energy drinks

If you haven't heard, there is a huge controversy going on about the ages of 3 girls on the China gymnastics team. The IOC found enough evidence that they have ordered the International gymnastics commitee to do a full investigation. If they find that one girl is underage (they are saying 14), then China loses it's team gold and the USA will get the golds, and this same girl edged out an American on the uneven bars...so that gold could be stripped too and given to the American. If they find out the China team cheated, they would only be left with 2 bronze medals for the womens gymnastics.

I watched most of the competitions and saw some really bad judging...totally screwed up and olympic golds snatched from the hand of some Americans. So, in a way, I hope they do find something to disqualify the China team...especially if they cheated their way to victory.

A reporter was looking for info on this one girl and found that all pages of her's had disappeared from the internet. He dug a little deeper and found her birthdate listed as 1/1/94...that would put her at 14. Her passport stated that her birthdate was 1/1/92. This is why a full blown investigation was launched.

Pages don't disappear, they might get deleted or changed but there's the wayback machine and search engine caches. I understood that the initial documents had been checked before the events by IOC and that they've been provided with a full set on request - birth, school records, passport, the works.

I know pages don't disappear, but I think you know what I meant. The only thing I heard about the IOC is that they went strictly by what the passport says. If they had checked on the other info, then why would they be launching a full investigation into the ages of these girls?

I wasn't very clear, was I. I understood that the initial documents normally requested from everyone - a passport sounds quite likely - had been checked before the events by IOC and that they've subsequently been provided with a full set on their request.

But the IOC has ordered the IGC to do a full investigation based on the findings. That was the last I heard very late last night.

You should see the South West Regional Finals, there's some impressive pre-school girls performing in that too. My girl was doing very controlled elephant lifts by the time she was five. If you do think their parents aren't given a choice then I'd like to read about it, it seems rather unlikely to me.
