We tried to drop Vacuum's second U, but they have a strong lobby. It's not surprising, since that's where so many of them work ... in the lobby.

You'd need to ask an American, I was guessing there.

What? Oh... no, you're not getting it. A Clanger's "A mistake, esp. one that attracts attention; a social faux pas. Phr. to drop a clanger, to make such a mistake, to ‘slip up’."

A clangour's a noise... "Loud resonant ringing sound, as of a trumpet, a large bell, pieces of metal struck together, etc.; a clang. Sometimes with a and pl."

In England it can be spelled Clangor or Clangour. I don't expect the Americans use the U. I would.

Here, a programme is what's on TV, a program's what you code on a computer.

Works for both. Aren't all terms used for computers chiefly American? I know that in (x)HTML/CSS it's color/center...

It's specific here for those two uses. I wrote programs (as opposed to programmes) in the 1960s on UK-designed computers. We invented them over here, I thought you knew that.

I vaguely recall skimming over Fortran IV, but I admit that I am old enough to have studied Fortran 77 at university... albeit at a few years earlier than most folks would have been attending university.

Programs are also the list of events at gradutaions, funerals, weddings, etc. You can also get programs at sporting events with a team roster and advertisements.
