This came up in another post, but I would be interested in knowing what you think poverty is. What's poverty mean to you?

There is physical and spiritual poverty:

Physical: If you cannot provide the basic needs for the survival of yourself or your family.

Spiritual: You may have everything you ever wanted in life but are still void of happiness and love.

not being able to afford and/or have access to the basics in life: housing, clothing and food.

Thanks for your reply---------in your opinion, what are basic needs for survival. I ask because everyone has a different idea of basic needs.

A sound definition of poverty - I'll second it.

Poverty is relative to the position you find yourself living. Poverty is not having a rich and fulfilling life experience.You don't need money to enjoy lifes riches.

Poverty is purely not having the finacial ability to survive in the society in which you live.

Wanting more than you deserve? The richest is the one who knows what is enough.

I beg to differ with the ones saying or impling that a lack of or shortage funds constitues poverty.

And here is why,

I had two odler brothers as we grew up one eventually wound up in Boston mass. he married a woman from there the othewr wound up in Dever Colo. I stayed home on the range that was their private joke,, anyway there were a few years that the cattle ranching biz just sucked big time, no rain, feed prices up cattel prices down etc...and according to the numbers on the different three income tax retuns the money my three kids and me lived on oer year was what my bro with a wife and 2 kids in Mass, needed per month just to cover housing and utilities and my bro in Colo. needed twice that a month for his three kids and himself, My three kids NEVER went hungry or cold or never did we sit in the dark because non oayment of bill. We always had what we needed and some for extra

while my brothers at different times wa wa'd about being so broke they couldn't pay attention,, I have a peice of property paid in full my house is mine clear of morgage while the bro in Mass is barely 1/2 way mark on his never ending house payments etc...

I guess what I want to point out with this never ending post is 'poverty is all in the mind of the poor person' wether he or she is making enough money to break a strong horses back or making just enough that there isn't to much month at the end of the money,,

my sister in law in Mass has been whinning for 30 years that my bro makes about 50,000.oo a year less then what it would take for them to live comfortable,,

If you always had what you needed and some over then you were not poor.

If they had problems because they'd overextended themselves then they were not poor (possible unwise).

If you have pulled in your horns as far as they will go and you still cannot afford food, clothing and a roof over your head then that is poverty - dying for lack of money.

In different societies (even, possibly, within the same country) the point at which poverty is reached will vary but it is not being unable to afford the repayments on the plasma TV and the new car, it's being unable to afford a crust of bread and a jacket to keep out the snow.

I know a "multi-millionaire pauper"! :-2 This person has almost as much money as god, but unfortunately is so damn frugle that it's a shame!!! I (& many others do as well) live a way better lifestyle then he does! He's so frugle, that he goes around on recycling day into people's bins they put out at the curb, to collect the cans & bottles the people have thrown out that have a "5 cent" deposit on them! He throws them in the back of his battered "89" pickup truck! He's so tight, "he squeeks" when he walks! :wah: So the moral is: having money, doesn't always make you rich!!!
