A Very Personal Question

Something I just read on FG is making me ask this of you:

What are you doing to make the world a better place?

This is not the time to be modest. Do you actively do something to make the world better, whether on a large or small scale? Or do you simply skate through life, just trying to get through it?

What are you doing to make the world a better place?

I have never thought it my responsibility to even attempt to make the world a better place. That job is just too huge and better left to the gods or god.

On a more realistic level and something within my power, I try not to be a burden to my fellow man or the society in which I live. I try to be a contributing member of society by paying taxes, voting and respecting the environment in which I live.

I do try in a personal sense in that I try and make time for people, cheer them up if they need it and make them laugh! That's everyone from my family to the kids at school. Other than that, I guess I recycle stuff...

We recycle scrap metal , we don't do it to 'make the world better ' we do it because when you take in a semi load of prepared scrap metal you can pay bills and eat for a month , but I do have to say alot of the places around this part of the country looks better without great grand pa's fisrt 1920 model junker decorating the milk cow pasture

kindness. that is all i can say. Giving a stranger a smile or kind word. just giving a little extra of yourself. to a friend or a complete stranger. Love and kindness goes a long ways. It may sound cheesy to some of you. But showing just little extra. can go a long ways.:)

One thing I do and have for many years... I plant trees. All kinds of

trees... and I start trees to give to people to plant because I'm no

longer in a place with enough land to plant any more. I have planted

a mimosa and an incense cedar on this property.

A while back my ex sent me some avocados from a tree I planted

over 30 years ago... pretty darn neat.

When I went to state fair I got a free Ponderosa Pine at the forestry

exhibit, I will get it a good start and then give it to my friends with

land in the Sierras...

I worked for 25 years - I made everything I did a positive in my life. I'm SOOOOO retired now - yes I still sub teach to get out of the house. I am really only interested in taking 2 week vacations and family trips every year. I have worked hard since I was 13 and now I intend to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Interesting question and a difficult one to answer.

I could list the things that I do that I believe has a positive impact on those around me, but do I impact the world?

I guess that the thing to consider is really this:

My greatest contribution will be through the actions of my children. I am only one; they are three.

I guess then the question would also then be: is the combined contribution to the world from myself and my brothers and sisters greater than the individual contribution of my parents? I would like to think that it is.

Therefore it is not just the power of one, it is the power of generations and the values and beliefs passed on that make the world a better place.
