...are they really trying to work with open source programmers or are they just trying to find a way to recover income from lost users?

I thought I heard something last year about microsoft filing a suit against some open source programs but I only found a case involving Sun Microsystems and... some other company that filed against them. It was supposed to be a precedent setting case that could open some flood gates for microsoft yet microsoft is claiming that they want to work with OSS developers. Do they? Really?

Microsoft won't compete on fair terms. I use windows because i have no choice in the matter but use open source whenever I can

There are several Open Source terms and condition sets, some of them allow for the software to be sold and some don't. MySQL is Open Source but some users have to pay to license fees.
