I am surprised that there has not been more in the news about Yves Rossy's crossing from Dover to Calais via a jet backpack. I can remember reading as a kid "Buck Rogers" in the comics where everyone was flying around with jets on their backs.

I saw it on the news today very cool indeed.

I'd applaud a "crossing from Dover to Calais via a jet backpack", honestly. Anyone stood on the cliffs at Dover who fired up his backpack and ended up in Calais would get my vote. This chap dropped out of a plane a mile and a half high, it seems more of a powered parachute drop to me. His backpack needs more pizazz.

He is working on the VTOL thing, I think its great to see people doing stuff like this, it sure beats restaurants and shopping any day. I am not sure I would want to fly to France on a jet pack myself, but I am glad there is a man who does. :-6

A French amateur pilot has returned to Kent to try the first pedal-propelled flight across the English Channel. Stephane Rousson, 39, is waiting for the perfect weather conditions to take his helium-filled aircraft from Hythe beach to the French coast. He needs winds of less than 5mph before he can embark on the voyage safely.

Mr Rousson failed to make the 34-mile (55km) journey in airship Zeppy in June, despite waiting two weeks for the ideal weather conditions. If successful, it would be the first such crossing of the Channel. Mr Rousson, who is keeping his aircraft at Lydd Airport in Kent, aims to travel 100ft above the water in Zeppy, which has two tilting propellers powered from a seat.

I flew from Lydd once, but not in anything that small. It did have propellers though.

Absolutely excellent, we are heading back into the age of gentleman adventurer! I love it, I wish to develop a new machine that will allow be to bore a tunnel through the earth's crust through to the antipodes.

I would applaud his "little effort" if I myself had not been jet packing for the last 10 yrs.

Nomad, do your jets run on unleaded or diesel? Or can you get aviation fuel from the airport? I have some biofuel knocking around if you want some!

My jet propulsion system is based on forced methane gas.
