To illustrate or educate, invariably. John Major was much like that too:"Prime Minister, we've just heard, the Americans have landed on Mars".
"What? All of them?"
"No Prime Minister, the probe they launched last October. It's landed".
"The last thing I need in a Cabinet Secretary is a sense of humour, don't do that again".

I'm glad I'm not a cabinet secretary or any other kind of secretary and before start thinking this is a joke it's not. Neither was that, or that... How many more times am I going to have to repeat "or that" until it gets through to you that I might actually be telling the truth?

Once you get into a loop like that you're stuck, I'd have thought.
John Major's renowned for that sort of instructive joke, I've no idea why."Prime Minister, the palace's response to the Joint Protocol Committee's update for state funerals arrived this morning".
"Let me see it. It's going to cost how much? Tell them they're joking, for that price I'd insist on burying the entire family".

Why do you think I ended it like I did so I didn't get stuck in a loop.
And that first scenario you described sounded like something out of yes minister.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_jokes into John Major's office, it amuses me to think of the two in juxtaposition.

There is nothing that would make me want to make a joke of anyone!
i wasn't raised that way, in our house you never made fun of anybody!
now my daddy loved to tell funny stories and jokes, he was a very happy guy, but they were never the type to make fun of someone!

At last, someone who thinks the same as me, only I hope this isn't some sort of joke, however judging by some of your other posts I've seen, I believe it may well be true.

Except for people with really bushy eyebrows.
I think its ok to make fun of them because they look like cavemen.

..........
Is this a joke I'm missing the point of or is this some kind of slam that would be even more offensive, IMO...
I joke and tease all the time... I tend to limit it to friends who understand my warped sense of humor and forgive me when I cross that taste line..
I tried to tease JJ when he first showed up and apparently I was either too deep or way to shallow for him to get it:D... I don't think I've teased anyone but chezzie and carolly since then... spot likes to think I'm teasing him... it allows him to close his eyes at night..:-4
not at all sure carolly knew i was teasing... but i blame her for that, not myself..:yh_bigsmi

Whoa there Watcher. I think you are correct and so is Odie. The meaning is different here than over there.
I know what Odie is saying about the kids over here with their pants (aka: trousers) hanging half way down their butts and underwear exposed. Guess it's some kind of statement the kids are trying to make like it's cool.
Now.....back to the regular scheduled program. :-6

I can stand any joke as long as we're laughing 'with' and not laughing 'at'
