Ok, baking soda & vinegar down the garbage disposal. Let sit for about 5 min or so and then turn on the disposal. Sometimes I put an orange or lemon down. Nice smell.

Put a drop of oil in the water when cooking pasta...it will stop it sticking;)

Open a door and the hinge makes a nasty noise........some washing up liquid on it....rub it in....not only clean it the noise will stop:D

Keep them dry by adding a few grains of uncooked rice to them.

The dry rice will absorb any moisture present. Dried peas work as well !

Also when they start rattling excessively it's a good indicator that they need topping up before they run out.

For fresh wine stains while still wet, soak with soda water and dry with a clean dry cloth. (Old restaurant trick).



For other wine stains in clothing, stretch the affected area over a bowl and sprinkle with salt, and then pour boiling water over it. This is

very effective. Make sure first however that the fabric and the bowl can withstand boiling water.

Woodlice.

Talcum powder is very effective against these. It is also relatively harmless. Sprinkle the powder in the area that they are in. This drives them away because it absorbs moisture without which they do not like. Problem solved.

Small garage, big car? Problems reversing your car in? Well try this tip.

Using an old tennis ball or similar and a piece of string, suspend the ball from the ceiling in such a way so that it makes contact with the centre of the rear window of the car when it is parked in its correct position. Now all you have to do is reverse the car in until the ball makes contact with the rear window. This will enable you to park the car to within one inch with a little practice.

Rear lights.

It can be quite difficult particularly in daylight to check weather or not the rear lamps are working correctly, especially the brake, reversing, and rear fog lights. A simple solution to this is to strategically position an old mirror enabling you to see the rear lamp clusters from the driving seat either by looking through the drivers door window or the rear window. For the rear window, mounting a long mirror or mirrors on the rear wall at an appropriate angle and height should do the trick. Now every time you start your car you can check all your lights are working before you leave your garage with no assistance. Most average people normally find it extremely difficult to have one foot on the break pedal and stretch their heads round to the rear of the vehicle to have a look without severe neck modifications which are both expensive and un - necessary.

Making sure your lights are working correctly obviously makes for a safer motor vehicle and can cut your journey time down by avoiding being stopped by a nice traffic policeman whom usually has better or more urgent things to do.

Travelling tip.

Always put a squash ball in your suitcase when travelling, particularly abroad. In some hotels and various foreign countries the luxury of a plug for the bath is often omitted. You will find that a squash ball is capable of substituting the bath plug in over 90 percent of cases enabling you the luxury of a bath. The density of the balls is such that they will not float but can easily be removed when required. This is always assuming that you have the luxury of water in the first place of course.

Curly bacon.

To prevent bacon from curling up when grilling, make some small slits around the edges with a pair of scissors. The bacon should remain flat and cook easily.



Scrambling eggs.

A handy tip for scrambling eggs is to use an old jam jar. Simply crack the eggs into a clean jam jar secure the top and shake well. The eggs will be ready in seconds with no mess. Not only a handy tip for the kitchen but is very good when camping as well.

Heat marks on polished furniture.

Make up a paste using cigarette ash and olive oil. Apply to the damaged area and then rub off. This is extremely effective for heat stains on polished surfaces. Alternatively pour a little Linseed oil on the damaged area and then sprinkle with sugar. When the sugar is absorbed just wipe off.

Polishing tip.

If using a spray polish for furniture never apply it directly to the surface, instead apply the polish to a duster and rub on, then polish up in the usual way. This prevents build-up of excess polish, which is wasteful and also difficult to remove.

Water marks on mahogany furniture.

To remove these, make up a paste using coffee granules and a little warm water. Leave the paste on the mark over night then polish up as normal.



Mildew.

This can be simply treated using household bleach. Just brush on and wipe off. If in any doubt about a certain surface or fabric test a small hidden area first. As an alternative, Lemon juice can be used instead. It acts as a more gentle natural bleach, with the advantage of a pleasant perfume as well.

Use lifesavers candy to hold candles in place on your next birthday cake! Kids love 'em.

For easy "meatloaf mixing", combine the ingredients with a potato masher

Zap garlic cloves in the microwave for 15 seconds and the skins slip right off

Instead of throwing away bread heels or leftover cornbread, use them to make bread crumbs. For use later, store them in the freezer.
