the deficit is record breaking only in terms of raw dollars. which is meaningless. the dollar has shrunk in value due to inflation for many, many decades. as a proportion of the the government's obligations, and gross domestic product, it is smaller than back in the 1960's.



but it makes for great, hysterical soundbites.
