When I was a schoolboy it was still the Belgian Congo, German East Africa, Rhodesia etc. etc., and in the ensuing years I managed to keep up with the changes in names of different countries, comfortable and even smug in my knowing the new names and their location. The recent Olympics threw me a curve an pricked my balloon as I witnessed several countries that I didn't even know existed. Well, at least I can still name all the U.S. states and their
capitals.

as a kid I collected stamps and have held onto my stamp book. Last year I took it out just to look at it and wow how much the world has changed, Russia, Germany, the middle east crazy huh.

I have to teach Geography and had no maps in my room at the beginning of last year. I found an old set of rollup wall maps stuffed in a closet. It had the old USSR still on it. :wah: The kids never heard of the place. We used it as a history/geography lesson and used magic markers to "fix" the map. Worked for most of the year.

I'm always amazed at the highschool students I encounter that can't name the states that border their home state.

:o I don't think we did. We concentrated more on Europe & Asia. I'm Sure we neglected alot of smaller countries in Africa too.
