Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

A few years ago some stores caused a stir around here when they stopped their employees from wishing customers a merry Christmas. Such an uproar was caused that by the next year merry Christmas was back.

I'm of the thinking that if i'm celebrating Christmas i'm gonna say Merry Christmas. And if you aren't Christian and somebody wishes you a merry Christmas don't get upset we aren't trying to convert you or anything! :D it's just us getting wrapped up in the spirit of the holidays! :-6

I'm also kinda on the fence with this though because i think Happy Holidays is perfectly acceptable too! It is a group of holidays around that time with Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Years, and maybe some more.

I think we should just not worry about what kind of greeting we get or give at this time or year, we should just wish peace, love and happiness to our fellow man regardless of what holiday we happen to celebrate! :-4 :-6

Yeah i've always said Merry Christmas too, but with all those holidays lumped together like that it's understandable to say Happy Holidays too i think!

i know if someone says Happy Holidays to me i'm not gonna get insulted by it but i'm probably gonna say Merry Christmas in return! :D

Always Merry Christmas, unless I know they're Jewish. It's a tradition in the USA and is what this special holiday was made to be...a celebration of the birth of Christ. I say Merry Christmas to everyone, and if say, a store clerk says Happy Hollidays, I look at them and say "noooooo, Merry Christmas" I usually get a smile and a Merry Christmas back. :-4:-6

We've had a similar problem in the UK from the councils who don't want to upset their immigrant tenants it seems. Stuff 'em. I say "Bah Humbug" to everyone.:-5

For a while I tried being "politically correct" and saying 'Happy Holiday". It, however, did not roll smoothly from my lips. It was so awkward I actually refrained from any greeting at all.

A few years back I decided, since the holiday we were celebrating was Christmas, I would go back to saying Merry Christmas, as this is part of my spiritual tradition.

I am now aware that the percentage of counted non-believers if very, very small and I highly resent the fact that their loud, complaining voices have robbed us (the majority) of our basic fundamental right to worship as we please.

In my personal practice, I greet fellow Christians with "Merry Christmas" and for those whom I know, and some are my friends, that do not celebrate the holiday, I wish them a Happy Holiday so as not to shove my faith down their throat. To those I do not know, I 'Merry Christmas' them with a big happy smile and hope they will accord me the same courtesty I would extend to them if I knew what persuasion they were.

For some reason, I only feel comfortable saying "Merry Christmas" on Christmas day. The rest of the year, I just smile and say, "Hey!"

I think Happy Holidays is appropriate. Can't see why people get so upset over two words.
