Please tell me the different types there are, and what works for you. I got lost last night, again, and ended up in the boonies far from home. I had to call my daughter for directions, she was out to dinner with her boyfriend, I felt so silly I was lost again. :-1
She said her boyfriend pulled the map up on his cell too, to direct me. (in between courses, what a trooper) Is that possible?

Garmin are good systems.
The only tip I can give you is to check out if the system comes pre-loaded with maps, or do you need to down load map or buy maps separately.
The best option is to get it with a map already loaded. Then ensure that the system is not too old, as GPS is only as good as the most current map.
The GPS pinpoints where you are, but it is the Map, that tells you where you need to go in relation to where you are.

What about the size? I've been looking into them as a possible gift for hubby. Some I see are 3-1/2", some are 4-1/2". Is bigger better, or does it obstruct your view. What about looking at the thing and driving? Isn't this an accident waiting to happen?
I'm liking what I'm hearing about the voice activated ones.
Should I suggest this to hubby and let him pick one out -- that is if he'd want one? Or should I just surprise him with one?

Which ever one you buy Chonsi you much always plug it in to your PC and get the map updates, or its becomes useless.
You could also get it added to your cellphone contract. Simple to use and always up to date. You can get direction on the fly or do your routes ahead of time.
Dash mounted ones are good if you keep them updated with the newest maps. :driving:

I took your advise, Barman, and bought one today to surprise him.
I ordered a portable, text to voice TomTom today from HSN for $159.99. I got the dash mount, the charger package and a 1-yr warranty also.
Thanks to everyone for their input. I shall let you know after Christmas how well hubby likes his gift. :-6

I've got TomTomOne. Wouldn't be without it. I'm OK getting from A to B on the main roads and motorways...it's the unfamiliar streets in the towns where I get lost and where my friend Tom Tom comes in ....love him....her !

Everyone's advise on the gps was very helpful to me and I did take Barman's suggestion to just surprise my husband with one.
Hubby was very happy with his Tom-Tom and on Christmas day he programed it for the route to our daughter's house to prove to me that his choice of getting there was the best way.

You've been to the dentist, Chonsi!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome. Do hope your mouth is soon happy again.
I got a Tom Tom for Christmas. Have used them in the States and in France. I like the idea of John Cleese telling me off. Main use in Sydney is that the latest TT tells me which lane to get in - which might seem a luxury, but geesch the traffic in this city is really something. And ya get onto a freeway by accident, you're often stuck on it for a long time.
My sister has a GPS that croons to her in Galbally type dulcet Irish tones... SWOOON

I just use plain old Mapquest plus hubs has loads of maps in his truck. Don't need one as he knows how to get around here. Except he does get lost in Philly:wah:
