A 70-year-old woman in India gave birth to her first child, a girl, after undergoing infertility treatment, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The mother, Rajo Devi, had been trying for 50 years to get pregnant with her 72-year-old husband, who had failed to become a father in two prior marriages. It was undetermined whose egg and sperm were used in the treatment, the newspaper reported.

I saw this story too. It has happened before in india with invetro-fertilisation and women in their 60's.

The culture in india is very different to us and only a son can inherit land. This is happening more and more where childless couples or couples with only daughters are giving up large amounts of land to pay for the treatment just to have a son to inherit.

Until their culture changes (which it won't) there will be more cases like this.

My only concern is the welfare of the baby, that he or she is born healthy. Indian people have very large familie's and extended familie's. If they were to die of old age, you can bet the arrangements for the baby and the family have already been considered.

Who will look after the baby if she's orphaned? Her grandparents?

What of all the abandoned babies in India who would give anything to be adopted or fostered?

God forbid I should deny someone their rights, but this seems an incredibly selfish act to me. How will this new mother cope with leaking boobs, stomach cramps and getting up to feed the baby every few hours? Will she be able to sit on the floor to play with her child in a few years time? Will she be able to run with her or grab her away from danger?

Many women can't have babies. My best friend can't. She has adopted and regards her adopted son as her true son. So do we all. The stability of a family is a wonderful gift to give to a child who hasn't got one. Couldn't she have spent her life giving love to other children? Rather than spending 50 years trying for her own child, she could have had 50 years worth of love from other children, while she tried for her own. What a waste of a life.

Let's hope her own child finds a loving adoptive family, should anything happen to her parents. Lets hope she's not abandoned on the streets whilst potential adopters waste 50 years trying for one of their own!

Agree with every word you've said....I'm speechless that in a country where babies are abandoned by the thousands daily that this has happened.

Dont want to sound too dailymailish....but.....Thats just what India needs alongside its space exploration......another soon to be motherless child.

There have been cases like this before in India. the last woman to give birth there was 63 yrs old.

We have to remember that this is down to a different culture than our own.

In India, only a son can inherit land and wealth.

Childless couples or couples with only daughters are giving up land in return for invetro-fertilisation to get an heir.

I know that within the Indian culture, this child would not be orphaned. To even pay for IVF in this country is an expensive project but to Indian's, it is a massive investment. There-fore, this would not be some poor destitute family having IVF on the NHS free which they don't have over there.

Just due to the sheer cost of IVF in India, this child would only be born to the wealthy who could pay for the treatment in the first place. If orphaned, for one, the child would inherit the parents wealth leaving them financially secure and two, extended family would also play a very large part. I bet that all of the pit-falls have already been discussed with the couple before and arrangements made for the child to be raised by family should the worst happen.
