I have no sympathy for the kayakers, i feel sorry for Jaws. there he was thinking he had a nice meat and fibreboard sandwich lined up and the cavalry turned up and took his dins away.

You have to be pretty mental to go out in a kayak in the ocean off the east coast of Aus haven't you?

Me too, so I'm reporting in. Sydney is awash with overseas visitors right now. I went walking with a bunch of Germans last Saturday and the first thing they wanted to know - as all visitors want to know - thanks Steve Irwin et al - is where all the totally deadly Aussie critters they've heard about are, so they can shiver with happy terror.

Well, right now, there are a bunch of sharks around, apparently. Really. Someone got chomped off the West Coast of Oz two days ago, and there have been a few sightings round here, which have closed beaches. These last ones turned out to be a panic caused by someone spotting a stingray.. but then after Mr Irwin's experience, stingrays are a bit iffy too.

I think someone once got stung by a blue ring octopus at Manly - the beach I go to each Sunday. He managed to do this right outside the life saving depot and survived the experience. About the same time I was taking a dip there and saw a black fin a couple of feet away - in this case it was just a penguin (there's a small breeding colony of fairy penguins on a headland there).

Yesterday's newpaper warned us lot on the east coast to beware of funnel web spiders which apparently are looking for love earlier than usual this year, and - as they drag the neighbourhood for talent - like to take time out in your boots, or in the folds of your beach towel.

I'm considering emigrating. There's way too much sunshine etc here right now. Has someone got a spare sofa in their igloo??? And can I ski in?

England is pretty cold at the moment -- below minus and the most we get to dangerous is a large conger eel.

I read about the chap who was last seen in the mouth of a great white in Australia. Your waters must be heating up at this time of the year in Australia which naturally is going to attract them in land for search of food. I can not understand any-one kayaking knowing that they are about.

That is a pretty big one, I think waiting a week or so to go back to kayaking and surfing would be wise. But you know people will still surf and all, you have awesome waves there. I was just starting to look at my summer week at the beach for this summer, enjoy the sun for me Pammie.:-6

Humans should rightly respect them and remember.... the ocean is their home... not ours.

Yes, you cannot go and chase them off, the ocean is theirs. You just stay out of the water during those times, and go surfing later on. :-6

So I mentioned it was time to start indoor swimming to get ready for surfing this summer, my husband is saying "later." I do have to wait until February (I have a small choir to direct on Saturday mornings) but can hardly wait to begin. Nothing is nicer than swimming laps in 80 degree water, when there is snow outside.....

My brothers wife is a choir teacher also. All under 10's. She has a beautiful voice and composed a song for my brother that she sung at their wedding. It was very moving.

It is an indoor pool, oscar. We just have a spiffy one in the neighborhood, and is a nice luxury.

I've told my boys that, and that's why they aren't allowed out onto the beach area with their Kayaks. They have to remain in the Inlet .....but that doesnt' stop sharks and that's why you always kayak with tha friend. simple basic raule of swimming surfing boating.

Although sadly a young teenager watched as his father was taken by a great white off the coast of Perth last week , and then in the same area (they believe) the same shark menaced some crab pot fisherman in a small boat.

it's a fact of life here but doesn't happen all that often though . Neither do snake bites. It's very rare.

You're more likely to crash in a plane getting to Australia than being taken by a shark. Within itself very different experiences but none the less more likely.

And lets face it when you're out on the beach and you go for a swim having fun a shark can really put a dampener on you day . But when you're in a jumbo? after the 15th hour you wish it it crash .....just so you can damn well land already!!!:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl .......I'ts long long long flight


I would love to visit Aus if just to get near one of those brutes. I think they are beautiful in a menacing threatening kind of way but none the less. I would love to be that close to one but in one of those solid steel cages inside another solid steel cage just to be sure.

Doesn't the weather heat the waters up at this time of year so they come in looking for food? The Kayakers must be mad.

but really you don't need a cage , we've demonized sharks for so long it's in our psychy. they couldn't give a rts arse about a human unless they are hungry and they only ever taste us anyway , that's why people are mostly 'bitten' rather than taken..............We really arent to their taste. Unfortunetly a human on a surfboard looks like a seal. and a swimming human resembles a fish in distress. That's why they are interested in the first place.

I call sharks .....the Labradors of the sea (anyone who owns a lab would know what I'm talking about here. ) they don't eat to live , they live to eat ............a labrador will munch down anything that's in it's path .....then half an hour later think about what it just ate (which wasn't too good ) and spit it up again.


From what i've read on Great Whites, i understand that often as soon as they have tasted human blood, they realise it's not seal and spit it out. I had a lab, i know exactly what you mean :D

I've eaten shark and i found it surprisingly tasty.

polar bears are becoming extinct, no ice anymore for them to trek on to find food.



I belong to 'save a polar bear' association in hopes that if they have to physically take them food, they will.

I saw the appeal for Polar bears on TV and i was very tempted to sign up. The truth is, Mr O and i donate to so many, i.e Snow leopards, Elephants, Chimpanzee's etc, you have to draw the line some-where. I want to help them all but where do you start?

If only people could understand that if their food is scarce, naturally they will look elsewhere and we have to tolerate them not persecute them.

It pisses me off where i live that they continue to build on Greenbelt countryside and then new residents complain because there is a fox in their garden. It's pathetic.

Mr O and i were also looking at holidays in Canada very recently and fancied the helicopter rides out to see the Polar Bears and arctic foxes. very Expensive though.

Who knows Odie, if 'Kauto Star' can come in for me at The Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, i may get out there. My shirt will be riding on that horse.

You are just so lucky to have that kind of wildlife. We get seals here and even dolphins but they are few and far between mostly off the Cornish Coastline. We also get sharks but obviousley not GW's. Basking sharks, i think and feed on plancton.

Aus is another place i want to visit before i die, just for the wildlife and I'm sure Mr O wouldn't say no to the fishing.

I have to say that the point of attack with a GW is awesome. When you get the documentary makers go out and bait them with hunks of meat. It's that moment they rear out out the water, the eyes roll back in the head, the lips go back and those teeth are exposed. God i'd love to see that close up.

Even so, in a kayak with no protection, just me and a bit of fibreboard, 'curious' is terrifyingly menacing.
