Fantastic story and i hope the man is awarded a medal for bravery.

What a lovely, caring pet owner he is. His dog is very lucky to have him ! I'm so happy that both him and the dog are safe. They look lovely together !

Wow, the pet owner was told that the pond was only "3" feet deep. (Which seems possible to wade through) Luckily for both him & his pet, that it turned out to be only "neck" high deep. As if it had turned out to be any deeper, the outcome could have been drastically different!

if it was me i expect i would do the same thing! theres no was i could just leave my pet there if they were in that jam!

we actually had an irish setter some years ago who loved to swim in the pond in the hot weather, he went with my husband out into the pasture one day in the winter and not realizing it was a thin sheet of ice on the pond, he ran out on it and fell through!

my husband says if he hadn't been there the dog probably would have drown because he would try to swim to shore breaking the ice as he went but he would get tired and stop, but my husband was on the edge calling him and urging him on and every time he heard his voice he would start swimming again, and he managed to make it to shore!

if he had gone under and hubs had jumped in after him i'm dread what might have happened to them because our pond is quite deep, but thankfully it didn't come to that!

my problem would have been if i had been there and he had gone under i couldn't just stand there and watch that i would have had to try and help him but i can't swim!!!

good for him for rescuing him, hopefully next time he will keep him on his lead!:-5:-5:-5

From what i read, i think the owner thought the pond was very shallow. One of mine likes to jump in the duck pond in summer and i'm not sure how deep it is although there is a life bouy at the side. I use his extended lead and keep that on him while he's having a swim.

I would do the same thing as this man did. Our dogs are like our kids and we love them so much we couldn't stand by and watch our babies drown.

My Great Pyrenees loves to be in the water, but unfortunatly we can't find a retractable leash for his weight so he can only play in the water as far as his leash will let him.

Sorry to be the only voice of dissent but I think the man is an idiot. How pleased would his wife be now if he'd died trying to save the dog.



I remember a case years ago of someone going into a rough sea to rescue his dog, followed (I think) by someone who then tried to save him, followed by two police officers who then had to try to rescue the first two - some if not all died. I'll try to find details but I'm sure Spot may find them if I can't.

I have had to cross the river once with a stranger, to rescue my newfie retreiver. My Dog loved the water and swam across the river to an island only to encounter coyotes. I was half way across the river to try and call my dog back when a jogger came by, he crossed the river too, picked up a huge stick and we threatened the coyotes as I called my dog back to me. I look back now and think how dumb but all I thought about then was the safety of my dog, I know the coyotes would have circled him and made him a meal even though he was a big boy he was no match for 4-6 coyotes.
