Jim Rogers: ‘UK has nothing to sell’

The pound is a currency with no underpinning and should fall against the dollar and the euro, says Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings and co-founder of the Quantum Fund with George Soros.

Nothing to sell, what utter tosh.

Suggestions of things we could sell.

1) Stonehenge, must be able to get a few bob for that. No one seems to know much about it, lets sell it.

2) Do you think we would get much for Wales?

3) Sea Shells, we could sell plenty of sea shells on the sea shore.

Must be plenty of other things we could sell.

This is the guy who made a couple of billion by selling Sterling short and forcing it out of EMU.

That's a great CV for him to pontificate on the state of the economy.

I reckon we'll be in the Eurozone by the end of the year, there'll be a snap June election and Labour will win on the basis of scrapping Sterling as its chief manifesto pledge which will push the Conservatives back into Euro-suicide.

Yes, I heard this guy yesterday saying Sterling is quote "finished" and for investors to sell anything UK-based in terms of stocks and bonds, (though he thoughtfully added "I hate to say it but").

I am all for Britain joining the Euro at some stage, but not in these sorts of circumstances as it will only lead to resentment and recrimination down the line. Also its unacceptable for a sovereign nation to be bullied by an assortment of currency speculators. Not acceptable, this is 2009, its a new era boys.

I do think its outrageous that someone would be allowed to say something so irresponsible, effecting the lives of millions of ordinary UK citizens. Obviously people in business have to be allowed to speak plainly about a situation, but these speculators often have vested interests in saying such things, so will he now outline what exactly his own personal short-term hedge bets are against sterling and the UK economy?

If it is found that say for instance he has bought a 2-week short sell for Sterling to go below the dollar by another 15 cents, he should be extradited to the UK and charged with some makey-uppy thing, and then flogged publicly in front of the Bank of England, then sent on his way.

Good day sir, hope you enjoyed your stay, we did. ;)

I suppose I could have been, in another life.

It would be nice to see it happen though wouldn't it, just once one of these guys getting some summary justice. They did it to admirals before Trafalgar, perhaps its time for a few corporates to get the big stick where the sun don't shine. ;)
