The thread title seems to have got it right. "Alphonso De Baaker, a retired teacher, said the attacker had a history of mental illness" and "The 20-year-old assailant had a painted white face, eye shadow and ginger hair, and was wearing a bullet proof vest" and "looking like The Joker from the Batman films" all seem central to what happened, they're from the Telegraph.

Probably underlines the fact that the mental health services in many European countries have bought into this "care in the community" nonsense in recent years. Which translates as "we couldn't be bothered wasting money on mentallers so we will let them walk the streets" policy.

In terms of the incident itself, dreadful, just dreadful. God help those poor families.

I hope we'd put up an equally shocked thread if a minibus blew a tyre and went off an embankment, the result would be similar and no less random.

Intent spot, human intent. Thats what makes it a human interest story.

Even a mad human has more intent than a minibus with a blown tyre.

Any casualties of the mini-bus incident would be the result of an accident. Should there have been some preventitive measures put in place to prevent the tire from blowing? Could there have been?

This incident in the daycare in Belgium is murder. Perhaps the perpetrator had symptoms of mental illness. Do we know if he had indeed reached out for help and was ignored? Do we know if had made threats to harm anybody?

I'm not here to trivialize the problems of the mentally ill. It is a complicated situation. It may be impossible to prevent all mentally ill persons from commiting a crime. It is only in tragic hindsight that we are reminded of the gravity of this problem.

My deep sympathy for the families of the victims.

Mental illness or not, anyone sick enough to intentionally kill children should be put to death without hesitation.

Tragic story takinge the lives of the truly innocent and helpless is disgusting.

I agree mentally ill or not he killed and for that there should be a price to pay. I will agree as a society we haven't done enough to treat the mentally ill if at all. We put them back on the street with little or no help with medications they stop taking. They need more than that as was proven here. :-1

It is such a terrible shock when something like this happens. Those poor parents who had just dropped off their children at nursery on an ordinary day,,who would think that would be the last time they saw their children alive,, and the thoughtof them being kiled in this manner,, so scared.

I don't know if I should comment here. I feel so strongly against people who do things against children. Children are defenceless. I would personally like to see this ****ing **** tortured mercilessly for a long time well beyond his begging to be allowed to die.

I know that according to my particular beliefs that I should be compassionate and forgiving but I find that this is how I feel for people who hurt children. I feel this way towards paedophiles too. I hate them with the full force of my being.

My heart does go out to everyone involved in this, especially the parents.

What puzzles me is the seeming inability of so many people to comprehend the nature of responsibility and mental incapacity. The Victorians got it, I've no idea why the beginning of the twenty first century should be so fixated on Old Testament style eye for an eye revenge. I find it rather sad.

I completely understand the difference spot, your being deliberately obtuse. My point was that there is a distinct difference between an act of multiple murder committed by a human being (despite or whatever their mental state), and a traffic accident. That was my only point on your statement.
