Much is made about the high cost of education in the US and the student loans college graduates carried with them after finishing their schooling.

The high costs do not start there. They begin at kindergarten.

Though public school is available to all children, this covers only grade 1 through grade 12. Part-time kindergarden is also available free but his might be for 4 hours a day maybe 3 days a week.

To enroll your child in full time kindergarten, which is 9 am through 3 pm from Monday through Friday, the cost in our area is $2,000.

In our area right now most schools are nearly at full capacity for the Fall start date. My daughter was fortunate to be able to leave work today to get our grandson registered.

Twenty-five years ago we paid just $300 each for our girls to attend full time.

What are the costs in your area? If you do not have to pay, how is it funded?

Kindergarten is just part of the school here. Pre-school is what costs us, unless you are low income, speak no English, or have a disability.

Your cost of $2,000 grand sounds about right for full time kindergarten and that's at a private school.

The position in England is at Getting help with preschool costs : Directgov - Parents ("Every three and four year old in England is entitled to a minimum of 12.5 hours of free early learning for 38 weeks of the year. This will rise to 15 hours a week from 2010, delivered flexibly over a minimum of three days."). From 5 to 18 all school costs are paid from national taxation unless a child chooses to be taught in a private school.

If, instead, you make private pre-school arrangements here it costs typically $70 a day which is tax-deductible.

This is not at a private school.

Today's pre-registration required a downpayment of $310 to hold the spot. Later in the year each child will be tested for their readiness to attend kindergarten and paperwork verifying all proper vacinations will be turned in.

The cost is for the kindergarten year which is the same length as the normal school session.

There could be additional charges/fees for other things, but as yet we do not know of them.

Child care for working parents is provided before and after the school day at a charge of $2.50 an hour. Child care is prepaid into a fund and then the child care cost is deducted from this amount.

Wow, there is no cost for kindergarten here. But you got a good price for child care, never heard of such a low price.

That price is through the school and is alot cheaper than his all day daycare provider charges. Then again, he'll be 5 years old by then. There's a big difference between babies, toodlers, youngsters and school-agers.

That sounds like an out-of-hours club on the school premises which feeds the child breakfast if they're early and lets them have constructive play time after the last school lesson, possibly playing sports or listening to music depending on the weather. We had an after-school club at the primary school here, $2.50 a session sounds about right, we'd not have timed how long the children were there before being picked up.

There is no cost here in southeastern Ohio. It must go by what school district you are in?
